Well tax refund is hitting the checking tonight so I may just buy the D40 in the very near future! I am curious as to what size SD card the Nikon can handle. Also can it handle High Capacity cards too? I want to stick with Sandisk due to some pretty sweet rebates running and was leaning towards the ExtremeIII series but wanted to make sure that would function etc with the D40.

I'm about 98% sure that it can take any. Even my old *ist DL can work with SDHC (4+ gig) cards thanks to a firmware update.

...yup, I threw d40 sdhc into Google and quickly verified it. It can work with any of 'em.

Thanks! Anyone know which card would provide faster downloads to the card, the extreme III or the HC cards?

I would not buy anything super fast. The benefit of the camera writing to the card is limited by how fast the camera can write to the card, not by how fast the card can be written to. Does that make any sense? I know that there are very little advantages to me buying an Extreme III or IV card for my Canon 30D as far as getting photos onto the card quicker. Now, on the other hand, they may transfer from your card to your computer (using a memory card reader) quicker. I'll try to see if I can find the site that explained all of this better.

Here is the site that unfortunately does not have the D40, but I chose the D50 for this link. It shows the write and read speeds in MB/sec. It is surprising that they are not all that different when it comes down to it. Maybe someone else here can shed some light on this.

Thats great info, too bad it doesnt have the D40 because I would love to pick my card based on such a detailed chart as that! I cant seem to find any via google search for the D40 so maybe I will base my choice on the D50 info.
