What rooms really NEED to be booked today and for when for a guest to secure them at all for 2024?

If you think what you want might "sell out," and you have the money to throw down a deposit (in the amount of one night's stay), make a room-only reservation! Then you won't have to worry about it. If you have to cancel, it's no harm, no foul. You'll be fully refunded, so long as you cancel more than 5 days before check-in. If you decide to keep the reservation and want to modify it, turn it into a room-and-ticket package, etc., later on, you'll still be able to do so. You just won't have to worry that the room will become unavailable.

Signed,
A person who will arrive at Disney World in 10 weeks and is currently holding 2 different resort reservations (granted, not for any highly in-demand or rare rooms), trying to decide between them. ;)

I think WL and Poly go like hotcakes. Maybe not totally gone, but it won't take long for certain time points to have less availability. 2 BR suites at various resorts on cash go pretty fast, not opening day fast but I wouldn't chance on waiting if you wanted to go at a peak time.

As others have said, named suites like King Kamehameha, Grand Suite, Disney Suite, Newport Presidential Suite, etc. Especially at popular travel times like Spring Break, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years.

Room types with 1 or limited numbers like certain deluxe rooms or Treehouse Villas, CC Cabins, Bungalows, etc.

Of course your experience may vary. I've seen most of these fairly last minute at times too.

I agree with everything stated here and would add Boardwalk View at BWI and Theme Park View Club Level at Poly.

We always booked when bookings opened because it gave us the longest amount of time to stretch out our weekly payments. That enabled us to take many trips without hurting the wallets.
