What rides do you consider "untouchable" ?

As a disclaimer to this thread I will say that I know very little about DL (I've only been there once) so most of my references will be about WDW. Second disclaimer: By "untouchable" I do not mean ungrades, improvements, tweaking or changes, I'm refering to total closure & removal ala 20K.

Now, we all know Walt never saw MK but many of the rides & ideas were spawned by him and DL and MK share many similarities.

I curious which rides would outrage you if they were closed ?

Personally, my list includes:

1) CoP

2) IaSW

3) Jungle Cruise

4) TTA (or for the oldtimers WEDWAY)

5) Dumbo

6) Hall of Presidents

Dumbo would be my #1 followed by the Haunted Mansion at #2. It's A Small World at #3.

HBC

1) Haunted Mansion
2) POTC
3) Space Mountain
4) Thunder Mountain
5) Spaceship Earth
6) Jungle Cruise
7) TTA
8) Hall of Prez

1. TTA
2. Carousel of Progress
3. Hall of Pres.

Those should not be touched!!!

Interesting thread.....:p

I would have to say:

#1.....IASW....it would not be the same with out it. It was tough during our June visit not to be able to ride it.

#2....TTA...just wish they would build something else for it to ride through.

#3.....POC and Jungle Cruise are tied for 3rd. They are classic true Disney attractions.

Others include: CoP, Haunted Mansion and Spaceship Earth.

Haunted Mansion
TTA
CoP
Hall of Presidents

I actually wouldn't mind if they replaced Pirates with another E Ticket dark ride. The original in Disneyland is much better and the Orlando version was never supposed to be built. Instead, the Magic Kingdom was supposed to get the Western River Expedition, which I would have prefered.

Haunted Mansion
Jungle Cruise
POTC
Space Mountain
IASW
Dumbo
TTA

They never should have touched JII at EPCOT. I'd like to only see minor tweaks and updates at Spaceship Earth and the Land boat ride.

AT DMGM, minor updates would be all I could stand at Tower, GMR or Muppets.

Nothing at DAK holds my loyality.

What criteria are you's using to determine your list ? Is it based on your ride experience, past memories or a link to Walt ?

My list was based on IMO what is irreplacable. Walt had direct links to CoP,IaSM,JC and others. To me replacing them would be a little like erasing Walt from the landscape.

The two in the most immediate danger:

Spaceship Earth
The Great Movie Ride

Other classics which I don't see Disney messing with:

Haunted Mansion
Splash Mountain
Pirates of the Carribean

I'm not all tied up as others are with Carousel, Timekeeper, et al. Evolution occurs in the theme park industry as well. The park concepts are enough of a tribute to Walt. There truely is nothing similar to his Magic Kingdoms. But to keep rides which continue to cycle with near empty audiences is foolish.

That said I'm not happy with the trend of closing rides with NOTHING to replace them (ala Timekeeper, COP).

In a sense, to me, no individual ride is sacred, depending upon what replaces it. There ought to be enough continuity so that I can continue to take my son on some of the rides I first enjoyed before he was born, but I don't have any expectations beyond that.

For example, Country Bear Jamboree has sentimental value to me--I remember waiting in the long lines to see it with my parents and grandparents in both DL and WDW, and I had the album (which I can still pretty much recite from memory). However, I would certainly understand if the Bears gave way to something better due to low attendance.

That being said, I'd sure like to continue to return to Splash Mountain, Haunted Mansion, Pirates, Spaceship Earth, Impressions d'France, Kilimanjaro Safari, Tower of Terror and Muppet Vision 3D, although I could see upgrades to each of those.

Honestly, I don't consider any attractions to be untouchable.

To me, the best way to honor Walt is to uphold the true spirit of his statement that "Disneyland will never be completed". (hopefully I got that quote exact)

That says that if ANYTHING becomes stale, and the best option is to replace it, it happens.

I just hate to see that rationale used as an excuse to close something without a replacement, or replace it with a meet and greet.

So yes, that means that its possible I could support the replacement of The Haunted Mansion, Hall of Presidents, Carousel of Progress, The Matterhorn, Peter Pan, Its a Small World, Pirates, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, Country Bears, Splash Mountain, Tower of Terror, and anything else, UNDER THE RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES.

Some contributing factors:

-A closure at DLR or WDW isn't as significant as a closure at both.

-Let's be smart about it... hit the weaker links first, which does not include most of the above.

-Replacements need to maintain a sense of continuity in every sense.

-Sentiment does play a role, but if nobody's going to see it, and you can't fix that, not even Walt himself would want to keep it open. So REPLACE it in the same spirit in which it was created. (Unless we're talking about something like Dinorama...)

So Matt.... are you saying NEVER replace Dinorama ? Just kidding.

Interesting point of view. I've never thought of myself as a very sentimental person, but for some reason I am towards certain attractions.

I understand - we here understand - that Walt's philosophy is what made/makes DL/WDW magical. But most here tend to be Walt historians with a knowledge of his past and what he stood for. In some regard I feel certain rides are links to the past for the vast majority of just casual fans. A group that I once counted myself in.

Well, as for me personally, yes, I am very sentimental about certain attractions. I would be EXTREMELY upset if they decided to close Peter Pan, for example. So many memories of riding that as a boy, the view of London from above...

But, I have to allow that if it just weren't pulling them in anymore, and that couldn't be changed with updating/renovating, I'd just have to be happy with my memories.

The HUGE caveat to that, however, is that I have to be confident that it would be replaced with something that is a true effort to create the same kinds of feelings. Not because they decided they could save an FTE or two, or because "guest surveys" say folks want more meet and greets.

As you MAY have guessed, I don't have that confidence at this time...

If it has been touched by Walt and is timeless...
Then I think is should be left alone!
Like IASW and JC!

Kinda like land marks......IMHO. Like the Statue of Liberty or the Washington Monument.
It's part of the history. :earsgirl:

***"As you MAY have guessed, I don't have that confidence at this time..."***

To some degree I agree with you. But recent events have raised my hopes. Philharmagic is a great replacement attraction. It still needs some que improvements, but that can easily be fixed. L&S redo of AE sounds as if it will be a top notch replacement. The Stunt Show at MGM is an improvement over fake houses.

But I'm also an optimist.

MY son loves this, although it has changed over the years its still there for now.:sunny:

COP, a Walter E. Disney hand crafted classic.

Peter Pan's Flight

Snow White's Scary Adventure

Space Ship Earth

Haunted Manison

People Mover

WDW Railroad

Splash Mountain, the only visable tribute to a wonderful classic film.

My list:

1. Haunted Mansion
2. Pirates
3. Peter Pan
4. Spaceship Earth
5. Railroad
6. People Mover
7. The Toad (grrr....)

I would also say Carousel of Progress but I've almost resigned myself to it going away. I'm not pleased but what can you do as Horizons and WDW's Toad illustrated.

But recent events have raised my hopes.
Fair enough. The only thing I'll say is that adequately replacing Legend of the Lion King is one thing. Doing the same job with Peter Pan or The Haunted Mansion would be something else entirely.

I'm actually an optimistic person by nature. It takes a lot to make me lose faith in something. Conversely, however, it takes a lot to regain it as well.
