What part of the US REALLY has the worse mail delivery?

I am wondering who has the best (worse?) "it took thisssssss long for my trade to get here" story.

Recently I mailed a pin to So CA and a t-shirt to Austraila on the same day. (Neither one priority) They arrived at their destinations the same day! Doesn't that seem odd?

I know a lot of the east coasters complain about their USPS service. My mail seems to take twice as long going out as coming in.
Comparing post marks dates: From CA to here -- Very Fast.
The mail coming from the northeast area does seem to take a little longer. (The same as ours --which I think is slower than most.)

What's your experiences in this area?

There was a survey about a year ago that found the Richmond, Virginia, area has the worse USPS service in the US, second only to Puerto Rico.

I once put a pin in the mail to Kathi/Eeyore64. I put enough postage for first class delivery on the LBE but didn't write "First Class" on it, and I dropped it into the chute after hours instead of taking it to the counter when it was open. It took 2 WEEKS to make the 150 mile trip to the Raleigh, NC, area. I could have driven it down there in an afternoon.

Heck, we could have walked it there in 2 weeks.

...and one to which we can (unfortunately) relate! We're almost paranoid at our house about sending pins in the mail.......my kids are fairly new traders/collectors and have been excited to trade through the mail, but we've already had two "close calls"......just in the last couple of months.

1. The first was a 'gift' pin sent to my youngest DD from a friend in Orlando--- --the last pin in the "wedding series", and one that she was extremely excited to be receiving. First off, the pin envelope arrived at our house, about 2 weeks after it was mailed, but it was mangled and........ very EMPTY. My DD was devastated. After several frantic calls, and 2 trips to the post office, the loose pin finally turned up at the main Jacksonville, FL post office in their 'lost mail' box. The nice folks there mailed it out to our house, and it arrived the next day. Total in-transit time for the pin: 3 weeks +, for what should have been 2 days at the most.

2. Our second horror story involves a trade with a very gracious and understanding member of this board. My oldest DD and the DIS member agreed on a trade, and we mailed our pin out INSURED (thank goodness), on May 2, 2001. After the pin didn't arrive at the recipient's home in what should have been a reasonable length of time, I contacted our local post office, and was told that since the package was insured, a tracer could be placed on it, but not until 3 weeks after the original mailing date. We waited and waited, and finally after 3 weeks, as we were preparing to send a tracer, the pin finally arrived in TX.......some 3 1/2 + weeks later......envelope very mangled, but pin in good shape. As new traders interested in protecting our reputations as 'good' traders, we were initially upset over what appeared to be a very lost pin. But in the end, we were quite relieved that the pin finally reached it's destination, and are forever grateful for the understanding of the DIS member!

We'll continue to trade through the mail, but have made it a policy to ALWAYS send parcels insured.......

Boy you guys got it good ...It took 3 weeks for a Christmas card to get to me from my mother..the kicker is she live less then 3 miles away IN THE SAME TOWN.............lol Sorry But I live in Antlers Oklahoma and the postal carriers and the post office are the ABSOLUTE worst! Called up there once to tell them the postal carrier was driveing across my lawn and would you please make a note to her so she will stop doing this. They were polite on the phone, but the next day the carrier comes up to my door and shoves the mail in my hand and sneers at me " you had better not call up there curseing about me , we have a job to do" LMAO I laughed and said that that wasnt the case but if she knew which was the road and which was my grass then there wouldn`t be a problem now would there? She sped off in a tissy......lol Needless to say she did stop driveing on my yard......lol

Baltimore mail is pretty fast: usually sending or receiving is 2-3 days max! Large boxes a little longer.

Several years ago I sent a pack of DL View Masters to So. Cal after an eBay auction. It took 29 days! But that was only that one time.

Never had a problem since!

I know about the USPS and can't speak for every city but where I'm from Letter Carriers take pride in their job.
The amount of volume that gets processed every day will blow your mind.... and what you ship only costs b/t $.55 and $5.75 most of the time. Try shipping with another company for that rate. Look the USPS is far from perfect but for what you pay in shipping cost you are getting GREAT service. If you want better service, let your federal reps. know that you think the USPS should be able to offer the same services as private companies. Remember your tax dollars are not used by the USPS. Sorry... I'll get off my small soap box now.

I have mailed an LBE from our local post office (a suburb half-way between Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC) at 4:55 PM on a Friday, and it arrived in a DIS member's mailbox in Mentor, OH in Monday's mail.

On the other hand . . .

In one of my earliest trades, an LBE coming from Texas to me took more than two weeks.

And then . . .

I mailed a pin to another trader in Texas and it never got there. So after waiting for two weeks, I asked our friend Pinhook to bale me out and send her this pin. It took over two weeks for the second attempt to reach the trader in Texas.

So, I don't know that we have poor mail service locally, but I believe that Texas may be the black hole of the USPS.
