I don't understand how doing a math problem correctly negates the fact that Canada doesn't allow sweepstakes. I am confused!

They had a thread like this on the DL board and someone said it was because gambling is illegal in Canada (for some reason a sweepstakes is concidered gambling) but if they have to do a skill problem they are getting the prize for their intelligence rather than gambling. Doesn't make much sence to me but it is the loop hole they came up with and it seems to work.

No, gambling isn't illegal up here! I've got about 5 casinos within an hour's drive of my house. It's just the sweepstakes that are a problem. We have to 'earn' our prizes, instead of just getting them for nothing. I suppose with lotteries and things like that, the fact that you're buying into them negates the need for a skill testing question. But often, even on things like McDonalds monopoly prizes, we need to do a relatively complicated question. And yes, that is pretty much the ONLY time I've ever used my BEDMAS skills.

There has been worldwide concern over the Canadians' math skills as of late. This is just a small test to ensure that if they were to win a considerable amount of money they wouldn't spend it all on maple syrup and hockey. I for one think it is a great policy!

You've got it all wrong though! We don't have to buy these things because we have the best quality of of both maple syrup and hockey already!!!!!

My math skills are horrible! I couldn't even tell you what that is. Boy, I'm glad I'm not living in Canada. I'd fail miserably.
