What motivates you to save?

Hubby and I have some large expenses we want to save for, but the little things in life keep getting in our way... Our only debt is our cars and our mortgage, so we should be able to save (over and above our EF savings), but when I'm about to spend money I don't think to myself "do you really NEED this, or would you rather have X?". If I did, I'd more than likely not spend the money.

I feel like I need a chart (like what folks do for their kids, LOL) to give myself "gold stars" when I do something right...

How do you motivate yourself to save?
