WHAT?!? Mexico's military crossed our border???

Yes, we should be paying attention to the efforts to control the power of drug smugglers. Perhaps that's why we wouldn't be making a big deal about the border crossing by a Mexican navy helicopter that was apparently engaged in anti-drug smuggling activity.

Huh?

I don't think anyone on this thread thinks that the situation at the US-Mexican border should be ignored. What is happening there is tragic, horrible and worthy of significant attention.

What people seem to be questioning is why this thread is focussing on a Mexican military helicopter which apparently crossed the border in pursuit of criminals, as opposed to the murders, drug trafficking and people smuggling that are occurring.

Sometimes they are in pursuit. Sometimes they are there offering "protection" for the drug smugglers, and pointing guns at Americans. If they are there in "pursuit", then it needs to be cleared with authorities in the United States, not in Mexico City.

Did you actually read through the whole thing? I just did and can say yes, I think there are people on here who made it perfectly clear that's exactly what they think.

While I admit that there have been quite a few posts which seemed to mock your rather passionate position to the Mexican incursion, I don't remember seeing a single one that made light of what was happening in the border towns. If anything, I would say that the snarky posts are making light of the incursion BECAUSE they are aware of the seriousness of what is really happening.

If a person does not know that there are UN rules dictating appropriate behavior regarding our borders then they did not get an appropriate education. But this has zero to do with agreeing or disagreeing with me. To agree of disagree implies opinion, I don't see where opinion comes into play here.

The issue to agree or disagree with is "I think it deserves more attention". To say yes or no is reasonable but once the supporting statements become laced with fallacies it stops being reasonable.
You're engaging in revisionist history here. That's not what you said. What you said, again, was:

All I can say is that if American's really have no idea that this is a big deal then our educational system, especially our American Studies classes, are completely off the mark.
So you weren't distinguishing between knowing history and whether or not the helicopter incursion was "a big deal".

I don't see why the United Nations is important anyway. The U.S. is entitled to enforce its borders without any approval from the U.N. The U.N. is just one mechanism to resolve disputes, it's not what creates our sovereignty.

Really, did you not see the big yawn? That's got to count for one. What about the ones saying it's a non-issue? I think they were pretty clear.

Amazingly, I agree with you ;).

Are we sure that there wasn't an effort made at the time of the incursion to let the US authorities know what was happening? I would hope that the US government would ensure that the military flight did actually cross the border for legitimate reasons (i.e., pursuit of criminals vs. protection of criminals!), if not at the time of the incursion, then swiftly afterwards.

Don't get me wrong...I think that all countries should make EVERY effort to respect each others' borders. However, I would also hope that there would be some tolerance when there is an on-going illegal war along the border which both countries are trying to quell. It just seems like it would be in both countries' best interests.

I took those to mean that the INCURSION is a non-issue compared to what is really happening along the border. Desperate measures are needed to control this situation, and cooperation between the countries will be essential to its success.

Yes, I was making the distinction and I'm not revising anything. My comments were directed at people who supported their positions with statements that were wrong with regard to present laws.

That's not how I took them. Some people did voice what you are saying, but they also seemed to be of the opinion that the topic needed more attention, not less so they appeared pretty easy to pluck out of the crowd.

Oh, please. Your post that I quoted was number 65 on this thread. Please point me to the comments prior to that post from "people who supported their positions with statements that were wrong with regard to present laws."
