What makes you book it?

I am from the U.K. originally (wee glesga lass). Moved to Canada in 1966. Yes I'm almost 50. I have family in the U.K., in Glasgow and Herne Bay (England, they are the black sheep). I would love to share Disneyworld with them, but it's like pulling teeth. How do I get them to book?

What are their objections? Is it the cost, or do they believe they wouldn't enjoy it? It had never appealed to me before our first visit in 1992. I'd gone along to the travel agents to book a 4 day trip to (the then) EuroDisney which I was doing purely for the sake of our 2 daughters (aged 7 & 4 at the time). The agent suggested that, for a little more, I could get 2 weeks in Florida. Of course, once I'd experienced it, there was no looking back. I still haven't made it to DLP! :)

If it's that they don't think it's for them, is that because they consider they're 'above it', that it's for kids, they prefer something more cultured...? It might be easier to give you some ideas if we're clear about the reasons for their reluctance.

If it's cost, that could be tricky. Whilst there are many ways to cut the costs, Florida from the UK isn't a cheap holiday. The passes alone for a family of 4 cost a small fortune. Then, of course, there's the fact that we tend to visit for 2 weeks. Even though food is relatively cheap and the exchange rate is particularly favourable at the moment, eating out every day for a fortnight soon mounts up. If cost is the problem, what would they consider reasonable to spend on a 2 week holiday? Where do they normally go?

I understand the 'pulling teeth' as it was the same for me with dh. No matter what I said he was adamant he didn't want to go, so for years he told me he would take me on my 50th birthday. I must admit to being surprised when he told me to book it in 2005, and although he moaned a bit before we went he loved it once we were there.

Hiya

I always find getting the planning DVD and putting on works a treat - me, DH and DD love Disney but last year I managed to persude my mum, dad and sisters to return after the last trip they made in 1989!

For my dad it was persuding him that Disneyworld parks are not ALL about the characters - and turned out he loved EPCOT and I also managed to get him to wear a birthday badge and hat in the park - I couldn't believe it.

Good Luck

My wife was the archetypal disneyphobe. She once remarked in Westminster Abbey within earshot of a group of American tourists.

"We have all this history. They have a 6 foot mouse"

This cynicism melted away the moment she saw the look on our 7 year daughters face when she saw Mickey pull up in the train to conduct the opening of the Magic Kingdom.

If you can afford it go. Its worth the scepticism before hand.

classic ground opening up moment !!

yep that will get them every time:)

Thanks for your replies, and encouragement. I intend to keep working on the family. There are small children in one branch of the family but in the others the kids are mostly mid to late teens. They all seem to think its just for little ones.

Some of them have been to Disneyland in Paris, but mostly go to European beach destinations on holiday. Sometimes they come here to Canada, but that's kind of boring. I'll have to work harder to convince them.

Chester's Mum - for kids in their teens, highlight the great rollercoasters and the excellent shopping opportunities ;)

There is lots to do for all ages from sunbathing by the pool to extreame sports. Find out what appeals to them and sell them on these.
