What Laundry Detergent is your favorite and do you line dry your clothes to save money

Another product I also use with every load is Febreze In Wash odor eliminator. Instead of spraying each item with Febreze, this is the washing machine version. I pour about 2-1/2 capfuls in each wash, front loader, along with the detergent. It really does eliminate stinky/sweat odor, not just mask them. :thumbsup2 Unfortunately, it has it's own strong perfumey scent. But, that's preferable to a lingering sweat odor.

Not trying to tell you how to do your laundry, but a bit of powdered OxyClean in the wash does the same thing, without a strong scent. Great for towels, workout clothes, my husband's outdoor/project clothes, etc. I had not used OxyClean before about 10 months ago, but I am now a believer.

I use Kirkland liquid. There is one with a lavender scent that I really like. Also use their fabric softener—liquid. I have several hanging rods built into m laundry room that I hang things on. I used to hang very little (mostly bras) but lately things with straps, drawstrings etc have been getting caught on the lint trap inside the dryer. So now I hang tank tops etc. My girls wear a lot of tank tops.

I will say that my mom used to line dry sheets and towels when I was a kid. There is nothing like the smell of sheets that have been line dried— little slice of heaven.

Usually Gain because I like the scent. I have a few things that need to be hung to dry but other than that I hate line dried clothes. I dread visiting my mom in the summer because of the line dried towels that feel like sand paper when trying to dry off.

Free an Clear here too. Never use fabric softner cup of vinegar in the wash makes the laundry soft enough. I have a rack to hang most of my shirts an bras on everything else goes in the dryer.
40 yrs ago when I had no dryer I hung everything out. Over the yrs it slowly stopped DH 1st said I was not saving anything esp when sudden Tstorm would roll in an clothes ended up in dryer anyway.
The whole pollen issue was another an we did all have allergies.
Oh an the bird poop ended up redoing 4 loads of laundry.
Then their was the day my DD was in a hurry ran out got a shirt off the line put it on an got stung by a bee OH an she was allergic to bees.
After moving to FL a few yrs ago an once again no hook up for dryer I hung my laundry out on a very windy day not even thinking about the neighbors huge catus behind me an go stickers in all my clothes Very fine stickers could not see them but they was there I finally learned my lesson NO MORE drying outside ever.

I buy All Free and Clear pods from Sam's Club. I have sensitive skin so have to avoid scented detergent. I switched to pods when I got our new washer. It's very persnickety about the amount of detergent I put in it and the pods are the easiest way to make sure I put in the right amount. I have a dryer that has a steam setting which is great for removing wrinkles. My entire family has horrible outdoor allergies so drying clothes outside is a no go. Our laundry room doesn't have space for leaving out a drying rack and I don't want to leave one where my dog can get ahold of the clothes on it. Thus I use a dryer for stuff that can go in it.

I use original scent Tide powder. Most things go in the dryer (the thread title mentions not drying to save money, but around here natural gas is very cheap right now. My gas bill last month was $25, and that is only using $4 worth of gas for the hot water, cooktop, and dryer. The rest is fees.) It's just DH and I so I only do 2 loads every 10 days or so.

I love to do laundry. I also am frugal and like to get great deals on detergent. I am not picky about brand, but I like All, Members Mark Tide and Aldi's Gain. I wash in cold and line dry most of our clothes. Line drying our clothes make them last forever and the colors never fade. We all have white towels so I wash those weekly in hot water with bleach. Not one stain and they look brand new going on 2 years. I do not use fabric softner. Waste of money to me.

I'm the same way, OP. I love to do laundry, including washing, hanging out to dry in the sunshine, drying in the dryer too, and ironing!!!!
I know, I know, I can't explain it.................sigh..........
I use Arm & Hammer with oxyclean, cheaper and does a great job.
thanks for the thread; never knew there was another "one" out there :)

I pretty much always use a “free and clear” laundry option due to skin sensitivities and not wanting unnecessarily added fragrance. Currently, I use Seventh Generation and I’ve been impressed with the small amount it calls for actually getting the job done. It gets out most of our stains with no need to pretreat.

We can’t line dry here. I also don’t use fabric softener. I didn’t grow up using it. I’ve heard some areas need it due to the local water.

I only use the dryer for underwear, socks, towels. Basically anything I beach and/or wash hot/warm. Almost all other clothes we wash cold/delicate and hangdry. Especially my workout clothes. Most tags even say no dryer.

Thanks for the reply. In my original post most are thinking that I line dry outside. I should clarify that I have a wooden drying rack in my basement that I hang everything on. My girls do all the folding so I have things really easy. Why spend a lot on detergent when you can get is so cheap.

For everyone who said they shop sales, CVS has great deals this weekend! I got All Free & Clear for $2.99, when it's usually around $8.00.

I use All Free. I have never line dried anything but I do have a rack in my bathroom for a few items that wrinkle easily.

I've tried the powdered OxyClean. I think the water is too hard here. It didn't dissolve completely. Same with 20 Mule Team Borax. I always had to boil a pot of water to melt the OxyClean or Borax. Was a pain in the butt to do that. :headache:

Also, be careful with the OxyClean. It left holes in my some of my clothes. I even Googled and other people have said the same thing. :badpc: It IS good for removing some stains. However, if the stain is so embedded in the fiber that it has basically bonded with the fiber, the OxyClean removes the stain AND the fiber it is bonded too - leaving little holes. :badpc:

My favorite is Persil but I generally buy whatever is on sale.

No line drying. Way too many ticks where we live. I hang up a few things on hangers to dry.

Our yard is just to woodsy for drying outdoors.
We tried it and had pollen/bugs/bird poop and had to redo our laundry.
We do use a rack near the woodstove in the winter to dry laundry.

Yes, bird poop is a concern here too. I love the idea of fresh air smell in my sheets, but not the reality.

I don't understand putting chemicals that will make holes in your clothing, next to your skin. Yikes! We've used Free and Clear since DD was little and had contact dermatitis and I had developed chemical allergies. Got rid of the scented TP back then too! I also like Seventh Generation. Very dry here, so I have a wool ball that resides in the dryer to help with static.

I recently came across a similar situation, in regard to what's in the moisturizers we are putting on our faces and allowing to absorb in to our bodies. When I was younger, I always checked the ingredients to make sure there was no mineral oil or stuff that would clog my pores and make me break out. Now, I'm on the hunt for a good hydrating moisturizer that still won't give me adult acne and that doesn't cost an arm & a leg.

I picked up a bunch of free samples. A lot of these products have great reviews. So I figure I'll try them all to see which ones work for me. I read the ingredients of each one. They ALL say: dimethicone, dimethicone, dimethicone, variations that end with -cone, one even said vinyl-dimethicone. :scared: Basically they all have a variation of silicone in them. The stuff that NASA invented to make their spaceships more durable. The stuff that potholders & kitchen utensils are made out of. The stuff that was in breast implants that, when leaked, made women so sick. Yet, this form of silicone is supposed to be alright for us? :scared:

I don't think so.

We really don't know the long-term cumulative effects. I have allergies to a lot of natural fruits. Yet, I'd still rather go with putting naturally derived ingredients that I am not allergic to than all this synthetic silicone stuff on my face which absorbs it. Or, some reviewers have found silicone just sits on their face and peels off when dry. :crazy2: Neither sound good to me.

I'm still on the hunt for a good moisturizer. May have found one last night made with 97% natural ingredients. :yay: And it's by Garnier, of all companies. I liked one of their moisturizers until they discontinued it. So this one probably will be too. That happens to me a lot. This one is made with aloe vera as the first ingredient, which always does wonders for my face after a sunburn. :thumbsup2 Yet, the jury is still out on whether it will break me out when used long-term.

Not picky on the brand, it just has to be dye and scent free. Although if scented, I like Dreft and other baby ones.

No hang drying for us unless the item says to. The kids, dogs, and squirrels would probably destroy the wash

Mostly use tide. And I dry towels. We hang up pretty much everything else. One load is hung in the laundry room. DD lies down all her underthings. Another load I'll hang in the kids bathroom. Try to rotate loads so that I don't have to hang up stuff in my bathroom. I do dry bedding in the dryer in the winter.

Purex Free. I cut bounce sheets in half.

Two people in our fam severely allergic to Gain. Used it once and never again.
