Our family laptop is on its way out the door. DD8 has been given quite a bit of assignments in which she needs a computer to complete. She needs a device in which she can go on websites for school to read, practice math, typing, etc. I also would like her to have access to Microsoft Word to produce assignments in the future.
I was looking at a Samsung Google Chromebook, but I'm really not sure if that's the right choice...I'm not too tech savvy I guess.

I would say she needs a laptop, not a tablet (we have an iPad), because I would like her to have a keyboard and Microsoft Word.
I am looking to spend under $300 (maybe I can get a good BF deal?)

So what type of device is best for a young school age child to complete assignments, browse the web, etc.?

Thanks!

I bought my son (he's 6) an Hp laptop @ best buy. It came in a bundle - a case, a mouse, and an antivirus program. It was abt $300. Check out their laptop bundles- maybe you'll find a better deal for BF.

I've had 3 laptops so far. First one was when I was 14. It was a Dell. Then I had an HP, and currently I have a Toshiba. I'd recommend the Toshiba brand over that, a Dell and an HP.

We have two Dells and one Toshiba and both are good. Our 7 year old can manipulate either one fine. We got the Toshiba bundle Tax Free week-end and it was around 300. Both systems can be fitted with parent restricted hardware quite easily.

I bought a Toshiba last year and I hate the keyboard on it. I'm always mistyping on the stupid thing. I prefer the HP keyboard, and the typing is very smooth. My aunt had a Toshiba for years (I think from 2007) and it had a really nice keyboard on it, but that's not the case anymore. Lenovos are have good kepboards on them, of course its the high end ones that have the really good keyboards.

Truthfully, a standard desktop keyboard is probably the best keyboard to learn to type on. And she'll have the traditional layout with the ten key number pad on the side.
