And exactly how interested are they in the divers?? DH and I start our OW certification classes next week. Now that I have the wheels in motion, I am starting to freak out a little about the sharks.

Granted, its Disney and they allow kids as young as 12 to do this tour...so it can't be that dangerous...right??

The sharks are a basically harmless species, I believe they're sand tiger sharks and possibly another species. Our waiter at Coral Reef called them Brown sand sharks, but 15 years of Shark Week have taught me otherwise:lmao:

Sand Tiger's are, like I said, pretty much harmless. They use them a lot in aquariums because they look menacing but are relatively easy to keep in captivity and aren't trouble makers. That being said, they're a shark and if you have any ideas of playing "poke the shark", it's probably won't be happy. I'd have to imagine that the CMs that work there will probably advise you against touching or trying to get too close to them. No aquarium would ever let guests go in the water if they thought there was that much of a risk.

I thought they were sand tigers..I had read somewhere that they were bull sharks and years of shark week had me freaking out also..thanks.

Trust me..no poke the shark will be done by me or DH.

Hey! There's an idea for a ride to replace Stitch... Poke the Shark. Oh, sure once in a while you'll lose a tourist or two, but overall it'll be less offensive. :goodvibes

First.. Have fun getting your OW certification. I just did mine last may and it was so much fun I'm taking the advanced class this fall. I was going to do the dive on our upcoming trip, but I'm not as comfortable as I'd like to be with my buoyancy (I've only done 5 dives) so I decided to wait until the next trip in a few years.

I think they have reef sharks and a brown shark. Anytime you get in the water with something that can bite you it's dangerous and I have read about people being bit by smaller fish on the dive at Epcot, but nothing major or life threatening.

I don't volunteer to be the first one:lmao:

Thanks so much. We dove for the first time in Jamaica this Feb and loved it so much, we wanted to get certified.

I have heard that the tank has seargeant major fish, which are small but territorial and aggressive.

I think any animal you harrass would defend itself. A friendly dog will bite if you irritate them enough.

And you can tell which are the Nurse Sharks; they are the ones that give out Band-Aids.

Bull sharks are the most aggressive sharks against humans - there is no way that they have put bull sharks in there.

Yeah they're definitely not bull sharks. I can identify those easily and that's definitely not what's in those tanks. PP post is correct that bull sharks are highly aggressive, they tend to be nosy and lots of attacks are reported from them. They can actually travel into fresh water areas (not to scare anyone) but what makes them so aggressive is they have one of the highest testosterone (sp?) levels of any animal in relation to size. No worries, no bullies at Epcot!

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

I gave my Dad Dive Quest for his 70th birthday and trust me, they tell you what you can and cannot do. As a certified diver, you will have respect for the instructions and will follow them. I don't think there are warnings about the sharks but I also highly doubt they are going to do a Jaws thing on you. I do know my dad and stepmother said it was so very hard for them to be able to touch the "coral" since where they dive, coral touching is forbidden. I also have a fantastic picture of my dad and stepmother with the huge sea turtle in the tank (it's also on the video they bought).

Don't worry about it. My dad and stepmother have dived all over the world and rank Dive Quest in their top three although they give it #1 over all for what they could expect going in.

LOVE IT (and I don't want to NEED a band aid, thank you).

I didn't think so either.

I have seen bull sharks..luckily never in person..I'm originally from NC and bull sharks can be seen there..I thought the reviewer was mistaken..I just wanted to be certain..

That is great! We are really looking forward to it.:dance3::banana:

:lmao: They really need a smilie, spewing soda on their computer screen b/c that's what I did when I read that I was laughing so hard.

:lmao:You would have thought, I had learned my lesson with the other comment, but then I read this and it happened again. One of these days I'm going to learn to not drink while DIS'ing.

The sharks are 4 or 5 feet long and just swim in circles. I just lazily finned a few feet above and behind them and found it fascinating. I believe they keep all of the animals very well-fed (you get to see the kitchen during your tour) to avoid any desire to nibble on the visitors!

They will give you very specific instructions for what to do and not do in the tank. It was an awesome dive!

If you and your DH are scared of sharks, then they are THE GREAT WHITE MAN EATING SHARKS!But, if you don't believe that Disney would put you in any real danger, they are the fat, overfed, and lazy sharks.:thumbsup2 Have a great time, we did it, and it was a blast. Don't forget to swim up to the Coral Reef and see what every one is eating.

Speaking of which, I am sure they will tell us in the tour, but how do you know which direction is to the "main tank" and which is the "Coral Reef" (its not like there are road signs or anything..I could always ask the Great Whites, huh?:rotfl:).
