I need to invest in a remote shutter release before our trip in March? Any suggestions on kind/style????? Don't really know where to begin to decide.

It depends on what kind of camera you have. You could look at a website for a company that sells cameras/equipment (ex, b&h, buydig, etc) and see what they show as accessories for your camera.

Or post what kind of camera you have and see what the DISers say.

I have both the cable release and the remote release, I prefer the remote in most cases.

Which would you find to be better for Wishes? Cable or remote?

All we have is a cable release, which we used for Wishes. You need to be close by the camera in the crowd to make sure nobody walks into it, so the cable worked fine. A wireless release would be nice if you want to take a lot of pictures with yourself in them.

I find the remote to be better for times when I will take a few photos and then move to another (nearby) location. The remote does not leave something dangling to get caught on whatever so it is better for moving about.

A cable is probably better for Wishes since we would likely be in one spot for the whole show (although I set up in three locations for Wishes last February). These days I hardly ever carry the cable.

Just a heads up for Rebel XS users. The XS has no sensor in front and cannot use the wireless remote. That camera requires the RS-60E3 remote.

I have looked online and notice alot of off-brand that are compatible with the Canon Xti? Are they any good or is it a matter of you get what you pay for?

I have two dirt-cheap cable remotes (<$7 each) from ebay that shipped from Hong Kong, and they both work just fine. It's pretty hard to screw up a button on a wire.

You'll get a much better image if you use a button on an oxygen free copper wire. I wonder if Monster makes remote cables?

Will a polarizer over the infrared remote help? Or at least a UV filter?

Is this the same for the XSi?

No, the Xsi has the sensor and works perfectly with Canon's IR remotes (just used it this morning). The Xsi also has the socket and can use the wired remote.
