We are in the market to replace our ten year old mattress, and I want to get one that will last and will help me sleep. I have a terrible time sleeping through the night. My arms and hands go to sleep and I wake up in such pain. Stephen likes his mattress hard, I like soft so I thought a Sleep Number bed might be the answer. However, Stephen does not want to spend a ton of money on one. So, does anyone know how much they are, and if they are worth it?

Or, does any have another bed that they know is good quality, and is soft enough for soft lovers, yet firm enough to a 230lb man? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have a BeautyRest something....extra firm...bought it in 1993 and it's still almost as firm as the first day we brought it home! It was well worth the $$$ we paid for it!

We are in the same boat, TC. We need to replace our 11 year old mattress, plus we wanted to upgrade from a Queen size to a King. We just bought a new mattress on Friday, and it will be delivered on Thursday.

My husband also wanted very firm, and I wanted something in the medium range. So we ended up getting a Simmons BackCare (which is firm) with a foam pillowtop (I think it is that tempur-pedic foam). We looked and looked, but this one was the most comfortable. It cost $1400 for a King size.

I can't wait to sleep on our new mattress! I am excited about having the extra room, but what I am most excited about is going shopping for new bedding! Yay! An excuse to change comforters, drapes, sheets, etc.!

We have a Simmons BeautyRest, which I bought in 1993 - and it's still just as cozy as the day it was delivered.

I travel extensively, and have slept in many different beds. I have yet to sleep in one better than my own!

It's firm, yet cushy - Hubby likes ultra-soft mattresses, I like the firm ones. We both love this one.

I think it cost about $600, but I'd spend twice that much if this one ever goes kaput on us!

Investing in the BEST possible bed is an investment in your quality of life, in my opinion. I know my entire universe suffers if I don't sleep well.

I keep telling Stephen that it's going to cost us at least $1,000, if not more, for a new mattress, and he just doesn't see why it should cost that much. But, he has no problem sleeping. He's usually more understanding than this, but he doesn't think a good mattress will make me sleep any better. He thinks I will sleep the same regardless of the mattress. I totally disagree. If I can find a mattress that decreases pressure points and my arms and hands don't fall asleep, I will sleep better. If I can sleep better, I will feel better during the day. I hope I can convince him to at least look into the higher quality mattresses.

Hi tc

I have a Sleep Number bed and DH and I LOVE it! We have the same problem with liking different firmness. I have a bad back and this has been the bed from Heaven for me.

We have the deluxe pillowtop queen size mattress, ultra mattress cover/pad, the foundation, the pump and the digital controller. I believe we paid around $1600 for the whole thing, and $50 to have them set it up.

Go to one of their stores and try it out. You will love it. Good luck! (I believe Elaine (helenabear) has one too and loves it also.

We replaced ours last year with one with the tempur-pedic memory foam. I can't remember the name, but I love it. PM me if you want me to ask my DH.

It took some getting used to, because it is very different from a conventional mattress. Now I sleep better than I used to with the old mattress. The down side is that it was expensive. It also is a bit hard in the winter months until it warms up from your body.

Thanks for the replies. I bought a tempurpedic pillow, and didn't really like it. I seemd kind of hard.

I think we may go look into Sleep Number. They are currently having a no interest till 2004 thing going. That may talk him into it.

My ears were burning there ;)

Yes I have a Select Comfort (Sleep Number) mattress and have had one for about 2 years now. My DH loves a very firm mattress and I need them softer. I am very very sensative to mattresses and usually suffer when I travel (oddly I do okay in the heavenly beds at the Swan though) since I am so spoiled with ours. It cost about $1200 (I think) for ours and I wouldn't ever go back. They have a 20 year warranty but probably will last longer. I can now sleep on my soft side and Luis can sleep on his firm side and both of us are happy. The other good thing is that if I do need it firmer (back trouble due to scoliosis among other things) I can adjust it. That right there makes the price so much more worth it. We once bought a $600 mattress and now it is in our spare room... hardly used. We learned then that a good mattress may cost more so we were willing to do it. Oh and they have wonderful prima-loft pillows there too. I use those now (and a few buddies here could tell you of my old pillow woes) as well.

Good luck!

We bought a Serta Masterpiece about 3 years ago. I don't remember exactly what we paid, but it was expensive and it's been worth every cent - I love that bed.

I bought a sterns and foster pillowtop, so far the hardest thing is rotating the mattress every 2 weeks. It replaced the Serta that I had.

I'm looking for durablity (no sagging) as well as comfort. Is the Select Comfort for me?

we are on our 23rd year with a water bed......do not think anything is as comfortable as this...

I mourn the day that we got rid of our waterbed. :(

No advice. Just whining.

Pumba, I so agree with you. I never had a hard time sleeping when we had a waterbed. It was a California King, can you say huge? When we went to get a smaller bed, we didn't even look at waterbeds, and I've been miserable ever since. Stephen won't even look at waterbeds, been there, done that. I didn't know Sleep number had such a good warranty. This bed is only 10 years old and cost us about $600, it would be worth it to pay $1200 because you don't have to replace it so soon.

I will have to say that I have slept on waterbeds and I sleep even better on this one. I think if you liked water beds than this is for you :)

Annie&Hallie'sMom, these are air filled mattresses so there is no thing as sagging because you can just firm it up with more air :)

My mom had one of those adjustable air type beds for a couple of months. It had a leak somewhere and she would wake up every morning down in a hole! The other side would still be fine, but she had pressed a lot of the air out. They came out to fix it several times and she finally made them take it back. Not saying all will have problems, but something to be aware of.

Ok here's my opinions for what they're worth...... I work in furniture sales currently and had to go through pretty extensive training by Sealy/Stearns and Foster.

My next bed without a doubt will be a Stearns & Foster. They are simply incredibly well made and will last, if taken care of 20 years. If you want something soft and he wants something firm try out some of their pillow tops. The "E" level pillow top is my personal fave.....firm underneath but it does have the pillow top.

Im not familiar with the Select Comfort?! However, if it gets really bad where the two of you need totally separate beds you can always get 2 twin XL's ...when put together they = a king size bed. *Places like Bed Bath and Beyond usually have mattress pads to keep them together and a strip to put between the two so you don't feel the gap.*

Cheryl--did you just buy your Stearns? Is that why the every 2 weeks? If it's brand new you may want to turn it frequently however, once you pass a few months.........you really only need to flip and/or turn your mattress 4 times a year. (According to our S&F rep)

We've also got a Stearns and Foster pillowtop and I LOVE IT! It is so soft on the poor old bones:)(arthritis), but still firm enough under to support us comfortably. And, btw, my hubby is more than 230lbs, so don't worry about the weight.:)
(plus not to mention the great deal we got on it, half off)!

I miss my Beauty Rest! It was the best mattress in the world until it wore out and gave me backaches. But I had it about 13 years. It was an extra-firm. Now I have a Sealy AND I HATE IT! Within a few months of having it, it hurt my back. I'm sorry I got this thing. The furniture store I bought the bedroom set from didn't carry Beauty Rest. I should have hunted it down wherever it was available! :( This one is extra-firm, but you'd never know it.
