Our 11 year old son has finally been diagnosed with high functioning autism after 9 years of misdiagnoses. Loud noises bother him and hurt his ears. What kind of ear plugs or headphones do you use with your noise sensitive children?

Both of my boys have Peltor noise reducing earmuffs. They work great & are really comfortable. You can get them from Amazon.

:thumbsup2

Those are the most recommended ones. Just do a search on Amazon. They come in various sizes and colors. I've seen kids in the parks who decorated theirs with stickers to personalize them too.

What a fun idea!
I thought so too.
I've seen little girls who decorated theirs with Princess stickers, boys with Cars and kids with full of the Mickey stickers that CMs hand out.

I got my daughter's headphones from eSpecial Needs. They only had one colour - red...which I was bummed about hoping for pink or neon green but when we got to Disney, my daughter noticed that many, many people were wearing red headphones. She said, "just like me!". I think that those ones were translator devices for foreign languages but she liked that "everybody" was wearing headphones like her.

Cute!

In case you want to get her pink ones, they do have Peltor brand pink ones on Amazon:

They also have a bit different ones in red, blue and yellow.

I noticed that your son is a bit older. Is there a chance of him being a bit self-conscious about wearing big and bright ear protection in public?

I'm not autistic, but I do have very sensitive hearing and wear ear plugs a lot at home, in public, and at WDW. I never go anywhere without a pair. I buy mine online from a company that caters to professionals who need ear protection and are very specific with the earplugs they sell in regards to level of protection, softness, ear canal fit.

I've also been eying a pair of custom hard ear plugs similar to the ones used for hearing aids. It would cut down on the ear infections and be more cost-effective over time while still being inconspicuous.

What type of earplugs do you use? I have debated on getting headphones for my DS for a while and with our upcoming trip I have been looking at getting a pair, but I am afraid he won't were them

My DS noise issues started after he was a teen (although much younger mentally). It was so bad we had to use ear plus with large soundproof headphones connected to an ipod with music playing. After a couple years of much therapy & work he didn't want those big headphones - he saw no one else wore them. So we found that the foam earplugs plus the small headphones that wrapped his ears around the back of head with his iPod worked out really well. He just looked like he was listening to music. Sometimes he was, sometimes not. It took years but we finally got back to nothing ........... and this year back to the foam plugs :worried: Hoping to not get as bad as it was so looking into molded earplugs.

Long story short if he is older and would not want the big headphones, using an iPod with music is a great way to buffer noises and fit in better.
