We will be in Paris in two weeks!!! Our first trip to Paris. We were wondering how cold it will be, and what to pack? Do we need a lot of layers? What would be the best coat to bring?

Thank you!

We'll be there 2 weeks from today as well!

I'm taking layers - so for the kids, vest, tshirt, long-sleeve top, then fleece jumper and winter coat. My thinking behind this is, if the suns out, we can leave the winter coats off, and wear the other layers, plus hats, scarves and gloves. Then, when the sun goes away at dusk, we can put the winter coats back on.

My kids will also be wearing thick tights or long leggings under their jeans/fleecy joggers, and probably 2 pairs of socks with their boots.

We will be there 2 weeks tomorrow!! We're taking thermal tops and long johns for my DS who's almost 3, I'm really worried about him getting cold so don't want to take any chances. Also taking t shirts, long sleeved tops, jumpers and a bit coat for him too.

For myself and DH I've got thermal leggings just in case, and the usual T-shirts, long sleeved tops, fleeces/jumpers and a big warm coat each. Oh and hat', scarves and gloves too. Like Elaine just said it's better to be layered up especially when going in retaurants, shops etc. Fingers crossed it won't be too cold for us all!

Well, I just stepped out of a COLD shower. Wore a short sleeved polo shirt and a wool peacoat today with a cashmere scarf, and I was roasting by 1pm. ROASTING. Most people on the metro were wearing light weight jackets.

I'll be wearing only a sweater and pashmina for the rest of the week.... and it was the same last year for pretty much all of November.

Also, the OP is from CHICAGO area. Nobody makes wind like Chicago... ;) For those of you who haven't experienced a Chicago winter, it is nothing like winter in France.

OP, I've been to Chicago at least a hundred days all around the year. It won't be as cold in Paris as there in winter, trust me. Even if there is a wind, it won't be like at home for you.

Bring layers - tshirts, sweaters, etc. But also PLEASE remember that unlike in the US, there is little air conditioning. Restaurants, airports, shops, metro stations are all fusty warm or even roasting hot. It can be a shock to someone expecting at least a breeze or somewhat cool air inside a department store, or restaurant.

Today I wore a lighter weight pair of jeans and a regular pair of socks - even my lower half got really warm. The worst is going from nice cool air outside into hot fusty overheated air inside. I avoid wearing wool sweaters - I bring cotton camisoles or tshirts to wear under cotton sweaters. I'll wear a coat at night, but during the day wear layers and the required wool scarf.

I went in November '05 and did wear lots of layers simply because if you are staying all day it is cold first thing and again in the evening. I also get very cold stood around waiting for rides or parades so if you have lots of layers you can peel them off or put them on as necessary. It worked well for us and meant that we were comfortable and warm all day long.
In my mind you're better off wearing too many layers: you can always leave coats in a locker if you get too hot but getting too cold means a trip back to the hotel!

Thank you to everyone who replied!!! We do live near Chicago and it has been sooooo cold and windy here. We had wind gusts yesterday over 40 m.p.h. Some were as strong as 60 m.p.h. also. It was in the 30's F. temperature this morning with strong winds. We have been wearing winter coats already.

I think we will still bring our winter coats with us, since it shows on the accuweather website that Paris has temperatures in the 40's durning the day and 30's at night. We can always take them off if we need too. I'll probably pack a fleece jacket too, in case we don't need our winter ones.

We have 2 nights and 3 days planned for Disney and 5 days in Paris, seeing all the sites and shopping. A lot of the tours will be indoors at museums and such, so we will be carrying our coats anyways. We plan to walk outdoors a lot since our hotel is near the Eiffel Tower, that's why we were concerned about what to wear.

Thank you again for your suggestions!!!

today was up to 14 degrees Celcius. I don't know what weather site you are looking at, but it is NOT cold. It is very very warm, same as it was last year at this time. Even at 7am it was around 5 degrees

I was shopping today and even in a cotton sweater was very warm. I can't stress enough the difference lack of any air conditioning makes.

My suggestion is that if you do bring winter coats, wear light weight layers underneath and plan to remove your coats quite a bit!

bavaria it may the accuweather forecast - 2 weeks from today its forecast to be snow showers and minus temperatures overnight!

True, but remember that two weeks is a long time away. I am leery of many online weather sites. Last week one told me that it was -11 degrees in Upper Bavaria; I happened to be on the side of the tallest mountain in Germany and kept my balcony door open all night. I can assure you that it was NOT -11! :rotfl:

We've already had quite a few minus temps overnight here but they have been followed by a lovely sunny and surprisingly warm day.

I'm going to take my winter coat/jacket for night times but also a large fleece that will go over a smaller fleece then I can take off the large one easily and tie it round my waist.

I will, of course, be wearing my Mammoth Crocs to keep my feet cosy
