I need a new full time job. I am currently working retail, part time. I dont have any benefits and the salary, well it is not very good. I have an A A degree in liberal arts, does this degree qualify me for anything? I would think it would qualify me for a decent paying job. I am not a teenager, i have been working for a lot of years. I need a good job with a good salary. Any advice would be welcomed.

I think we would need more info.

What are you interested in?
What kind of hours are you wanting to work?
Do you have any other experience than retail?
Have you been searching local classified ad to see what is available in your area?

Just some things you would need to think about. Do you live in a college town? A manufacturing town? What type of opportunities are available? Are you thinking about going back to get a BS?

I know locally a BS/BA go further than an AA regardless what your major is.

My main interest is Disney :) Would love to work for the mouse but not in the $6.50 an hr front line employee.
Actually, I would love to go back to school and earn a B.A., would love to be a teacher, but cannot afford it. I support myself ( and a cat) and have to pay for an apartment, vehicle, food, etc etc. I just feel stuck. I live in Daytona Beach, not a hot spot for high paying jobs. I would love to be able to earn enough money to return to live in Southern Calif. I did have a good job, worked for a major package delivery company for 8 yrs earning close to $40,000 (at my peak) until 1998.

Bottom line, how are your computer skills? Without good skills (Wrod, Excel, PowerPoint at minimum) you're never going to get anywhere.

My advice is to look at your capabilites (well organized, good at working with difficult customers, good with numbers?) and get it all on a resume. Then figure out what type of work you'd like to do, tweak the resume to reflect your skills appropriately, and start applying for jobs.

I guess what I would suggest is looking into a company that offers tuition assistance. That way you could work full time and go to school part time. Since you already have an AA then it may take a few more years then you may like, but it may be worth it in the end. The job also may not be what you want, but it could be a means to an end. How old are you? Have you looked into financial aid? If you are over, I believe 25, you would qualify for more assistance then you may other wise. Also there are plenty of programs available for teacher, ( atleast in IL), for tuition assistance. I would check into it.

I work for an insurance company. Depending on your computer skills, you could qualify for positions in a number of areas - mostly assistants or data processors. But our admin assistants begin at 37,000, if not more. (Metro NY salary). They have assistants to help with claims adjusting or underwriting too. Those areas have lots of growth potential.

Good luck!

I have a good friend who majored in the arts, but she got a BA. Upon graduation, she was bummed that there weren't many jobs that she qualified for. She went with her passion and for a long time she regretted that decision. Finally though, she opened her own interior design business. She didn't only do homes though. The last time I spoke with her she was doing quite well and had many business clients. We don't live in a very big area either.

I can't begin to know if this would be an option for you, but just thought I'd toss it out just in case.

Check with the cable company, insurance companies, utilities, temp agencies, etc.. see if you have the experience they like for an entry level admin assistant job or help desk position. Check with AAA and see if they have any dispatch positions available.
