I know it is early but sitting around this afternoon and started working on my packing list for marathon week.

What do you bring that others.....like me.....might not think of bringing?

I have added 2 tennis balls to last years list as DH and I both are dealing with PF. Also our roller thingy....but what else.???

Hopefully this will help people going to marathon week for the first time as well.

Thanks

Kim

I always pack way too much stuff, going on the theory that if I dont have something, that's what I'll need, so I bring everything "just in case"

...then dont need what I brought, but find out there IS something else I wish I had brought...

sigh

I know I overpack  But in January it's so hard to tell, I just want to be prepared. I usually have:

- 2-3 running shirts (I figure I can wear these in the park anyway)
- long sleeve running shirt
- running shorts + running skirts
- tights (ick!)
- cap
- gloves + hat
- running jacket
- 2-3 running socks
- The Stick
- pain meds
- waist pack
- knee brace
- Road ID
- Garmin + charger
- running shoes (of course)

I think that's about it. I'd love to take a reusable ice pack but never did because of the liquids restriction on planes. With my luck it would leak in my suitcase. :upsidedow

KIm don't forget some toss away clothes for teh start if it is cold... they all get donated

I was thinking about going to GoodWill for some toss away clothing myself. Oh, and I have a couple of mylar blankets for the early morning hours as well.

geauxhalf Great list. I especially like the item about clipping toe nails--I always make sure to do before I have race!

I don't keep track of what I have packed, but IIRC, for 2008, I packed the following:

5 running outfits (needed 3, since I was running the Dopey, but this gave me some choice in shirt, etc)
Garmin + charger
Bodyglide
Gu/Sport beans/etc
Twizzlers (a pre-race food)
Hydration bottle & Camelbak
2 pairs of shoes
Hat

If it had been cold, I would have had toss clothes, but they weren't needed, so I didn't pack them.

I did, however, make sure that all of my running things were in my carry-on bag. That way, the airline could lose my luggage, and I would still be okay for the races.

Hi!

For an ice pack, go to your nearby happy discount store and get one of those old fashioned ice bags that you put ice in! They work so much better than a ziplock bag.

I always include those cheap throw away ponchos. I get them for about 99 cents. They work great in the park, and they are sure handy if it rains, you can just toss them or shake them real well, wad 'em up and put them in a pocket!

I also have a 1 quart hot water heater. It makes boiling water in less than 1 minute, that and Java Juice and a couple packs of instant oatmeal and you have breakfast.

Kim - these are all really good suggestions! I like SAHDad's additions of Body Glide, Garmin and charger, sport beans (you can never be sure they will be giving them away at the Expo). If you have a "stick", it is a good thing to bring along. For the marathon, you never know what the weather will be, so you do need to bring a variety of clothes for cold and hot.

Also a garbage bag for the possibility of Rain and warmth...

Some good info so far.

AFM:

More than just the number of shirts I need - sometimes I don't like that one in the morning. lol Of course skirts, socks, shoes, etc. Running gear is always in carry on.

Beans/GUs/etc.
Propel "sticks" - it's the powder that is pre-measured in easy open packs for the 16oz water bottles. Use those before/after to help stay properly hydrated (and get Pirates of the Carribbean taste out of the water at MK).
Biofreeze in single use packs - since I seem to need it when there are no med folks around.
Sunglasses and lens wipes.
Ponytail holders/hair clips.
Sunscreen & Carmex

I think there is a comprehensive list that Cam put together a couple of years ago in the Welcome to WISH sticky. I'll see if I can find it.

Also a garbage bag for the possibility of Rain and warmth...

DH and I like to use clear disposable rain ponchos - the hood comes in handy if it is actually raining and our WISH shirts are still visible while we are wearing them.

Thanks Lily, I did got back quiet a ways and couldn't find it.

There are some awesome ideas here

I also bring my pillow, coffee pot, cereal, cooler filled with water and Powerade and almost all my running gear because you never know what you'll need.

Oh yea, I drive which makes it a bit easier :)

enjoy,
Duane
