What is your line in the sand?

So from this post, I gather that you were not genuinely interested in why people post when they are done with Disney.

All right here's a question for you. If you are irritated by negative posts about Disney and people saying they're done, why do you visit this thread? Personally, I can't stand the "everything Disney does is magical threads." IMO these people have a right to post whatever they want without having to defend their opinions, so I just stay away. Why isn't the same courtesy extended to people who are disappointed in what's happening at WDW?

Please don't assume on my behalf.
I understand why someone would want to vent their frustrations with Disney.
I understand why someone would want to explain why they're done with Disney.
I do not understand why someone would want to continue posting on and about a topic they have no interest in anymore. Especially when it's done in a negative way and has nothing to do with "attractions and strategies". I literally have no idea why someone would want to spend their time doing this. That is why I asked.

I'm not entirely sure where the line is for us, but I know it is very, very close. Here are the things that are pushing us away from WDW:

  • FP+. It is perhaps the worst thing to happen to the parks ... ever.
  • Annual ticket increases. In just 5 years a 7-day base pass went from $234 in 2009 to $324 in 2014. That's an increase of 38%.
  • Food price increases. We were priced out of most TS meals years ago, especially the buffets. I simply cannot bring myself to pay $46-$50 per person to eat at Chef Mickey's when it was $32 5 years ago. That's an increase of 44% - 56%. CS meals are really no better. Back in 2009 a meal at Pecos Bills (pork sandwich, carrot cake, large soda) was $14.46 with tax. Today the same meal is now $18.60, a 29% increase.
  • The requirement to plan our vacation to the minute 60-90 days in advance and needing to be online at midnight when your FP+ window opens up to get the FP+s you really want.
  • The necessity to "walk" a DVC reservation in popular resort categories or risk not getting the room you want.
  • The homogenization and reduction in quality of both food and merchandise.
  • The little touches of pixie dust magic now gone: waking up Tink, paint brushes at Tom Sawyer island and divers with messages at Coral Reef to name a few.
  • We went on a non-Disney cruise last Spring Break for a fraction of what a Disney vacation would have cost.

Add the insane crowds of Christmas, Spring Break and Summer when our DD doesn't have school to that list and yes, we are very, very close that line in the sand. Our next trip is in a few weeks and we have another short one planned for Spring Break. Depending on how those go we may be back for Christmas 2015 or we may be somewhere else on the proceeds from renting out our DVC points.

Just wanted to point out other price increases that are on par with Disneys:

Gallon of milk: 2014 $3.76 2009 $3.00 25% increase
Dozen Eggs: 2014 $1.99 2009 $1.49 34% increase
1 lb of butter: 2014 $3.99 2009 $2.78 44% increase
1 lb of ground beef: 2014 $4.29 2009 $2.79 53% increase
1 lb of coffee: 2014 $5.03 2009 $3.67 37% increase
1 lb of bacon: 2014 $5.76 2009 $3.60 60% increase

I'm sorry, but I did not assume. I was asking for clarification, but you did not answer my questions. What is your point in asking why people continue to post on the boards who are done with Disney?

I actually have seen very few posts from people saying they are completely done with Disney and not interested in it any longer.

Many are taking a break, hoping things will change. They hang out here to monitor what is going on in the parks so they know if things change back for the better.

Others are cutting their Disney days back, maybe adding some Universal days. If they are cutting back, they still need to be current on what is going on in the parks.

It's really not complicated.

And honestly, as the PP indicated, it's pretty obvious from the title of this thread what it would contain. Why did you click on it?

but you know, despite all of us who have cut back or quit for a while (sounds strangely like an addiction doesn't it?), they still have bigger and bigger and bigger crowds....so perhaps disney doesn't have to worry about those of us on this thread ;)

Right now they don't have to worry, but what about in 5 years? I think most people start finding other places to visit if their current destination is too crowded. I just think time may tell. I could be overly optimistic, but I hope not.

I'm suprised when people say they're done with Disney World but still regularly post (usually negatively) on a "theme park attraction and strategies" board. You may liken it to visiting a FB of an ex, but I don't understand that. Unless, of course, you mean that you also publicly post on their FB page things you hate about them and details on why you broke up... but I don't think that's what you meant.

I also think it's possible to keep up with what's going on in Disney World without contributing to a forum.

I replied in a lighthearted way and jokingly mentioned FB. I then proceeded to give 3-4 legit reasons someone would continue to visit and/or post.

I also think its possible to avoid an innocent thread that seems to bother you. It has gone on for 14 pages without issues. People are just genuinely responding to what their line would be (if any) A forum is defined as a place, meeting, or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged. Positive, negative, indifferent, all should be welcome.

Because there wasn't a SDFP, I Hate FP+ or Throwaway Room thread available?

Why don't you compare like to like? You're comparing food products
(essentials) against discretionary income. Is this really an accurate comparison? Not really.

I guess if I really wanted to take a Journey into my Imagination, I could think of a few things that would cause me to avoid Disney. However, I don't see anything in the near future that could change my current stance. It may just be me, but I think many folks that get tired of WDW and can find that line in the sand probably are coaxed that way because they visit too often. I can't imagine WDW having the same magic if I went every year or multiple times a year. We go every 3-4 years for 1 week and never have any complaints...how could we...we're at WDW!! So, if I really had to search for that line, it would be "By making me go too often and then losing the magic...I would be forced to never return"!!!

And yet many of us did gladly, we went and went back and had awesome times over and over and it wasnt until recent changes that made us go hmmmm this isnt as wonderful and fun as it use to be.

@ Mkrop...I don't doubt that is true for many people...I'm just saying that for me (and I think I can speak for family members that have come along), we don't care what has changed between visits...it's all about being back at WDW after a few years away. In fact, if enough has changed, it makes the experience that much better, because we like "Different". I personally have never looked at anything WDW has done and thought I disliked it...instead I have said "We need to do it this way now, because that's how it's done", we have gone with the flow, and just had a great time. I understand some people don't like change...at WDW or anywhere else...I understand that...Of course, I also believe some people would complain regardless just because change is difficult...even when the change is good!

Wish I could say my salary increase has been at the same rate!!! :confused3

Single day at Universal is 96 dollars so WDW is within dollars of other Amusement Park. That should be like to like.

:thumbsup2 Me too! I am not entirely sure what would draw a line in the sand for me. We only go to WDW every 3 years, so while I understand others frustrations with how some things are, they don't bother us that much. I could see Disney pricing us out of a vacation there, but we also like to visit the darkside now that the kids are older and they aren't exactly cheap either. So we save for our WDW vacations and take other trips in between.

This Christmas we are heading to DL, which I went to several times in my youth and I can't wait to see how it compares to my adult visits to WDW. My mom lives with in a reasonable driving distance from there, so maybe we will start going there more frequently . . . Who knows.

So bottom line, there may come a time when Disney prices us out of the market, but for the time being we are good. :)

I'm with you! I have never been able to do Europe for less than a Disney vacation. Not even close. :confused3

P.s. And there's only 2 of us, no kids.

We (just the two of us) spent 6 days, 7 nights in London at the Marriott County Hall for less then WDW wanted for 8 days at POR.

It is possible. It also depends on what kind of WDW vacation you take.

All along I have been simply asking why people would want to spend their time doing this. That is all. I ask out of curiosity. You are the one assuming I'm "irritated", "not genuinely interested", and implying that I'm attacking someone's opinion.

One reason I find this topic so interesting is because I am coming from the opposite side of the spectrum. After visiting Universal 5 times since 2003, this last time I was there I just "didn't feel the magic" as some of you have stated. Well, specifically over at IOA.

Back in 2003 USF was a relic of older movie rides, and IOA felt like a refreshing thrill park with amazing theming. Or maybe that was just because the only place I had ever been to before that was Six Flags Over Texas (which is really just a bunch of rides packed together for an over priced amount of money - no "magic" to speak of).

The first time I walked into IOA I was enamored. As a Seuss fan I loved Seuss Landing and purchased enough souvenirs there alone to fill a suitcase. Lost Continent really felt fantastical and the Dueling Dragons were exhilarating. Walking through the gates to Jurassic Park, the music playing, the torches lit... I'll never forget that. Toon Lagoon didn't excite me as much as the other places, but it was still fun to explore, and then Marvel island had the amazing Hulk coaster and all sorts of cool gift shops and other fun stuff. Hell, even the "Port of Call" gated area was worth gawking over.

The next time I visited I went to USF as well and really enjoyed my time there as well (especially the Simpsons ride that had recently opened at the time), even though I was still more excited to get back to IOA.

The following visit had the first Potter area open, and I still remember standing in Hogsmeade blown away by the area. And while I was trying to gather my marbles, here come the older Weasely twins with a CNN camera guy following them. What luck?! Add some Butterbeer and the technology behind Forbidden Journey to that, and I didn't want to leave.

And then there was this past visit. My wife saw me salivating over Diagon Alley promos and she surprised me with a vacation at Cabana Bay Breach Resort. I spent the proceeding months making touring plans, buying photo connect passes, and all the other things to ensure the vacation was awesome.

And yea, Diagon Alley was a LOT of fun to walk around in. But good luck doing anything. 30 minute wait to buy an ice cream? check. Multiple attempts to ride the new Gringotts ride (including 3 early entry arrivals) and countless ride breakdowns adding up to several hours of wait time across multiple days in order to ride it once (and not be impressed at all)? Check. Shoulder to shoulder people? Check. Hour long waits to take the train to IOA even though the posted time was always 15 minutes? Check.

Bar none, the best thing about Diagon Alley was the shops and the decor. When the best thing about a theme park is it's shops... well... that is disheartening. We had a blast at the Halloween Horror Nights, riding the new Transformers ride, and re-exploring some of our old favorites, but in general - I just didn't leave wishing I could stay. By the last day I was done with the place.

Seuss Landing has lost all it's variety, and now all it does is peddle Thing 1 and Thing 2 merch. Lost Continent has been gutted to make way for Harry Potter and Co, leaving a disjointed area with the amazing Mythos restaurant, and a hokey stunt show (Sinbad) and a hokey show ride (Poseidon). Hogsmeade is still cool, but still just as compact and crowded as ever. Jurassic Park has had one of it's entrance gates pulled down to make way for new construction, the other had the torches off and the music was really quite in order to not penetrate into Hogsmeade, and the dino discovery center was full of broken learning centers. Toon Lagoon went from mildly exciting for me to downright skipable (who in their right mind cares about Marmaduke and Cathy the crying ice cream girl in this day and age?) And Marvel island is locked in a state of non-change now that Disney owns the rights.

The place that once blew my mind was stale. I said in a previous post that the line in the sand for me with Disney would be when the park stopped changing and there was nothing left for me to discover. That seems to have happened to IOA for me. Granted, they are building a new ride that is either based on King Kong (or I'd love to find out it's actually a Jurassic World ride), and they have committed to at least 1 new attraction per year) - but if the rumors hold true and these new attractions are another Harry Potter expansion (Ministry of Magic where the Fear Factor stage currently stands), a water park, and more resorts... well, then that is not real exciting for me. More Harry Potter just means more stores selling the same stuff.

Anyways, I've gone on long enough. I suppose I am saying that currently I am not interested in Universal until they change enough to be worth paying the several hundred dollars it costs to buy tickets and the express passes again (for those of you complaining about Disney prices, Universal is MUCH more expensive to "do it right"). I am considering trying to squeeze in a day there for my kids when I take them to Disney as I would love for them to see Seuss Landing, ride a few rides like Despicable Me, E.T., etc..., but to do this requires the 2-park passes for all of us ($402 for the three of use, son is free), and then another $120 (minimum) if we want express passes so we don't spend all day in line and can actually take our timer and enjoy the park. So a minimum of $522 (more if they either raise prices or consider that time period to be a higher priced season) to go to Universal for one day with 3 paying people and ride some kiddie rides. That is 1/4th the cost of a week long vacation at Disney staying in their cheap resorts and 1/6th the cost of staying at Disney for 7 days in a deluxe resort.

Crap, I just wrote a novel. Excuse me while I go buy some more ink for my computer. It's run out.
