A spinoff from the thread about books/plays you liked/disliked in school.

I looooved MacBeth and always think that I should pick up a copy to reread it.

Romeo and Juliet would have been fine if it weren't for the ending, and well, that would have really just made the whole thing moot. LOL. But I'm kind of a cynic and the whole double death thing (hmmm... is that considered a spoiler?? Hehe...) just didn't do it for me.

Soooo... what did you like the best, if anything?

A Midsummer Night's Dream, and it's not entirely because I got to play Helena in our inaugural Shakespeare Workshop production of it.

Ahhh, cool :thumbsup2 I always wanted to be an actress but never had the courage to try!

We did Romeo and Juliet in high school, so it remains a favorite of mine.

I did not have a big part, but I knew I was getting comfortable in my role and with the language when, on day, I said..... "That car runneth the sign of stop."

My favorite is Henry V. It has some of the best speeches in all of Shakespeare. Mel Gibson's Braveheart speech he gives, before going into battle, and other such "rallying the troops" type speeches by other heroic war leaders in films is patterned after Henry V's, "Once more unto the breach, dear friends. Once more! Or hole up the wall with our English dead."

Then, the eve before the big battle, when they had lost soooo many men already, including Henry's brother, the Duke of York, his cousins, and so many English soldiers, and they were outmanned and out sworded, on the enemy's homeland, he gives his, "We few, we happy few..." speech. Brilliant! :worship: :thumbsup2

There is FREE Shakespeare in the Park, June 9 - August 1, in Central Park, NYC.
Canceled only in the event of tremendous rain. :umbrella: Bring an umbrella to sit through short patches of rain showers. It's LIVE theatre! :dance3:

This summer it's "THE WINTER'S TALE" and "THE MERCHANT OF VENICE."

They do Shakespeare in the Park here, too... right now they're doing Much Ado About Nothing and then later next month it's switching to MacBeth with an all-female cast, which should be interesting :thumbsup2

Hands down my favorite of Shakespeare's is Antony and Cleopatra :thumbsup2 I think Cleo is the most vivid character he ever portrayed (and there isn't many of his works I haven't read).

Romeo and Juliet is definetly my favorite, but I'm becoming a fan of A Midsummer Night's Dream & Hamlet. (Especially since David Tennant played Hamlet in a TV version...:lovestruc)

I have only read Romeo and Juliet in high school.

The reason? I went to three high schools and kept missing plays.

R&J was freshman year

The next high school read either Julius Caesar or Macbeth freshman year, so I missed it. Sophomore year was world lit and junior year was American Lit. Senior year would have been English lit, but I moved again. Then escaped lit for Dual Enrollment English Composition. And in college I refused any literature courses.

Can't say I thought anything of Romeo and juliet.

I had the pleasure of watching Helen Hunt in the play Twelfth Night on television. And that was my favorite. :). I probably would have enjoyed reading it. :)

Isn't Shakespeare in the Park fun? Sometimes I see moths flying around the actors though, as the play starts at sunset. I always wonder if any actors have swallowed moths during their long speeches?

"Oh, Romeo, Romeo, wherefore ACK! < cough! cough! gag!>" :crazy2:

One time, I had just met a guy and had given him my phone number. But, I wasn't sure if I wanted to go out with him. So I didn't answer the phone. Then he left a voicemail message saying he had two tickets to see Shakespeare in the Park. I thought, "Man, he sure knew how to snuff me out of hiding!" :rotfl2:

The all-female Macbeth sounds really interesting. :)

My favorite Hamlet was Kevin Kline. I was madly in love with him at one time. That could also be why I love Henry V. He played that in Shakespeare in the Park, too. I think I stood in line for hours for those tickets. :crowded::upsidedow:crowded:

When I was in high school, the Zefferelli version of the movie, Romeo & Juliet had just come out. So every type of class that could possibly show R&J showed it. English class, English Lit, History, Drama, World Lit, :headache: :headache: :headache:

My very favorite Shakespeare play is "Cymbeline." I love that there are roots for several fairy tales in the play!

I also enjoy Much Ado About Nothing. My favorite tragedy is Richard III. Favorite history play(s) are Henry 4 parts 1 & 2 and Henry V.

There's not much he wrote that I don't like. Perhaps Richard II.

My father started the Utah Shakespearean Festival, so I grew up with Shakespeare. When other kids in kindergarten were talking about Goldilocks and the 3 bears, I was telling them the plot for Macbeth. Truthfully, not a bad way to grow up!
