What is your favorite era of history?

I enjoy learning about the 1800's, the pioneers and "Laura Ingalls Wilder" days. I love reading books set in that time period. Also the 1940's. I would have loved living in either of those time periods.

That's mine, too. I used to pretend I was Laura Ingalls when I was a kid. I still love to read about that time period.

Another vote for the Tudors--I've been fascinated with them since I was a little girl and read a biography of Elizabeth. My BIL lives near Hampton Court and every time we visit, I go at least once--usually twice. I can't imagine being lucky enough to drive past Hampton Court on the way to the grocery store. :lmao:

Though tragic, the period leading up to and including the Civil War most fascinates me. The war itself, not so much.

My favorite is Regency Period England. There is a great book called The Regency Underworld that really got me interested in this era.

Mine would be the US from about 1850-1920's. :)

With most of my interest being in the pioneer movement, the antebellum south and the Civil War.

I assume that you've stumbled across Patrick O'Brien's novels? If not, you should give one a try. His Aubrey/Maturin series focuses on the R.N. during the Napoleonic period. Much detail about the sailing and lifestyle aspects of British navy officers during that time period.

I spent 1 1/2 years reading them back-to-back on my lunch hours. I actually shed a tear when I got to the "end" of "21". They're easy books to read when you already understand the sailing aspects, though others have told me they struggled with the sailing terms. And, for the record, I am hopelessly in love with Stephen Maturin.

You should definitely check around to see if there's an English Country Dance group in your area (if you're not dancing with one already). It's the style of the Regency Era. We have a few groups in Southern California and we have a few Regency Era balls during the year. I've attended two balls so far and it's wonderful to see everyone dressed in Regency attire and doing the dances. ECD is great fun and a great workout! :thumbsup2

Are you "me"??? ;)

Couldn't have said it better myself..:thumbsup2 Would love to be able to take one of those vacations out west where you actually head out via wagon train and camp in the wilderness - just like the Ingalls did..:lovestruc

MIGrandma: Although I've been hung up on reading strictly Amish books for months now, could you suggest some authors of the 1800's/pioneer books you've read? If you prefer, you can PM me.. Thanks! :)

I have always found the latter half of the 19th century (about 1850-1899) to be interesting. I also find the Victorian and Edwardian eras to be fascinating. The whole style of dress.

The 1940s and 1950s also interest me a lot along with WWII.

I love history so it's hard for me to pick just one era.

I read all the Little House books and used to play pioneer. I would have loved to have traveled by covered wagon and live in a one room cabin and run around barefoot.

Oh! I'm also very interested in the Romanov family and what happened to them during the Russian Revolution.

I've been fascinated with the ancient Egyptians ever since I was a child. I'm also interested in the Romans and others during that time period and would love to see Pompeii and Herculaneum.

The Civil Era is also fascinating to me. Just an interesting time.

I was a history major in college, and I play miniature wargames. Although my main area of focus was ancient Rome (and some Greek - so yes, I have plenty of hours in Latin and Greek), I am also interested in the Age of Sail, the middle ages, and World War II. Lately, I have started reading more on the early colonial period, leading up to the American Revolution.

The Great Depression to the Vietnam War... slightly morbid but oh so fascinating. I wish I could take a history class on just this.

I am most interested in Antebellum US through WWII.

My freshman year of college I took a block of 4 classes: English, History, Political Science, and Religion, all about WWII. It a really neat experience.

Ever since I began reading Philipa Gregory's books based on the Tudors I have become completely fascinated by the whole period of their reign. Her books have inspired me to find out as much about them as I can, I don't think I've ever read so much historical information without it being required

Frontier life. The move west for 1849 Gold Rush & Oregon Trail time period.

I was lucky enough to visit Gold Rush territory & Donner Pass in the Sierra Nevadas of CA 2 yrs ago.
This year, we'll be seeing some of the end of the Oregon Trail in Oregon.

Me too! Especially the Battle of Waterloo.

Have also had an interest in the Middle Ages and the Vikings

I love history. For the longest time I was into American History but I'm now into the British History and the monarchy. Reading and watching lots of things about Queen Victoria and I just finished watching Edward VII on youtube. Excellent program! Now I'm reading about George V and Edward VIII abdicating. Interesting stuff.
