I am 40-ish and looking to lose a few and tone a bit.... don't have a lot to lose but post baby soft! Thought about p90x but I don't think I would commit the time to that and I have heard it is really really hard. Just like to know what is working for others.

I have an elliptical and a treadmill for cardio. For muscle tone, I recommend Jillian Michael's 30 day shred or a good yoga DVD. I alternate to avoid boredom.

I am actually a huge fan of all the Beachbody workouts--P90X, Insanity & TurboFire. I find the workouts challenging but fun, and they give just the right "push" that I need to workout from home.

I also go to www.crossfit.com and follow the workouts on the site daily.

I've always liked the Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds series. You don't need any special equipment and the DVDs are not expensive. She sells "weighted balls" but I've used my 3lb. hand weights just fine, and if you're just starting out you can even use canned veggies or skip the weights part altogether. I used to do the 2-mile walk DVD 2 or 3 times a week. Now I go to the gym 3 times a week and do yoga at home, but I still occasionally do the 2-mile or 3-mile walk DVD just to add a little more to my weekly routine. It's fun and she is really encouraging!

A friend of mine bought the P90X a couple of years ago and has only watched (and I mean watched - not done) one work-out once and said it was just too difficult. I've never even seen the commercial so I can't comment.

I have been doing Leslie Sansone for years. I have never been very overweight, just a few extra baby pounds, but I have never been in-shape so to speak. Many workouts are too much or you need too much coordination (yes, I can't dance either)...so I find these easy enough, yet effective enough.

I agree with Leslie Sansone. I actually do many of her workouts that are on On Demand through our cable provider, Comcast. I don't know if you have anything like that, but check it out before you purchase anything. I find her workouts pretty easy, but have noticed a difference in the waistline from them. They don't take much time either. I also have Zumba for the Wii and get a really good workout from that.

DH and I did P90X three years ago. The workouts are hard and time consuming. Some of them require 90 minutes. Three years ago I didn't have that kind of time with two-year-old twins. I lasted about two weeks; DH lasted a little bit longer. Unless you have the time to devote I wouldn't get started with it. I will say though that it works. We have a few friends that did it and I can't believe how much weight (and inches) some of them lost.

I use P90 (not the x version as it would kill me!) and enjoy doing the workouts.

I have to agree with Leslie Sansone DVD's - she has a great variety of DVD's from 1-5 miles. My one favorite is walk/jog - where she combines walking and jogging in place in a 2 mile DVD. You can make the workout more intense by adding arm movements. I lost over 75 pounds using her workouts - I did combine DVD's doing at least 5 miles a day.

I also like Jillian Michaels 30-day shred - I alternate this with the walking DVD's

You could also do the Couch to 5K program as well.

I agree with those who have recommended Leslie Sansone, especially if you are just starting out.

I really love Jari Love's Dvds for weights, as well.

Also check out what your cable provider has for "on demand" excercize videos. I've found that I really like Kendall Hogan's workouts.

Insanity the best, not too long, amazing results. Tried P90X too boring. I never get bored with insanity.

I never manage to stick with the DVD tapes. The only thing that has worked for me at home believe it or not is the DDR Dance Mat game on the Playstation. I'm 40 something and for cardio it's just a very entertaining workout. And they have a workout mode where they keep track of calories burned. If you ever go that direction, let me know - some DVDs are more workout mode friendly than others.

I thought I'd like the Just Dance games too, but I borrowed one once and its just too low impact to get your heart going. For weights I still go to a gym, but the treadmills and elliptical get so boring there, I'm glad I have a gaming alternative at home.

Wii EA Sports Active. I've only just started with it but I like it a lot.

Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds Cardio fitness. It is great and it really works. Great toner and weight loss too. She stresses fitness and not just having a great body to show off a bikini like some of the leading DVD's. I also have an elliptical machine, but seldom use it anymore because I have gotten such good results from Leslie. She also never tries to get you to push yourself too hard, but go at your own pace - she's so practical.

I have an elliptical and a treadmill that I alternate, find a show to get hooked on on netflix and tell myself I'm only going to watch it when I'm exercising. I've been "down" for 3 weeks since gallbladder surgery on Dec 21, and am SO ready to get back to it!!
