We have two cats at work. Both are males, the little one (Rascal (1yr old)) keeps meowing and almost bawling and trying to get at the big one (Spike probably 2 or older). Spike keeps hissing and growling at Rascal, but Rascal won't let him alone, he just keeps following him and bawling. It is driving me crazy!!!! What is going on with these two????? One is "fixed" the other has an appointment to go under the knife.

Any ideas????

Sounds to me like they haven't been "properly introduced" if one is hissing at the other.

Also sounds like Rascal wants to play, but Spike wants nothing of it and Rascal won't get the message.

Rajah - we have had them both since they were just small - Spike before Rascal. So they both have been together for a while. Rascal does love to play, but Spike seems really irritated by him today. He is going crazy right now. Maybe Spike isn't feeling well????

Yes, just today. They are usually buddies. Playing in the AM and napping all afternoon together. But today Spike is mad and Rascal is just crying about it.

If you can, separate them for a little bit and observe Spike when Rascal isn't pestering him. Is Spike as energetic as normal? Interested in food? Do his eyes look bright, or dim like people's do when they're not feeling well? What about his litterbox habits -- normal?

If there's anything in Spike's manner when Rascal isn't around that makes you think Spike isn't feeling well, I'd call the vet. Or, at least, observe him today and if he's still acting abnormal tomorrow, take him to the vet. Any kind of change in behavior like you're describing is something a vet should check out.

But it's also possible that Rascal got into something that has changed his scent in Spike's "eyes" so that Spike doesn't recognize Rascal. If Spike acts and looks totally normal except when Rascal's nearby, I'd look to Rascal for a difference.

I was initially thinking that you are describing my two babies. They act that way all the time (the oldest is a spoiled brat and does it only for attention... they really do love each other :)) But since you say this isn't normal, there could be something wrong with Spike. I agree with a lot of what Rajah said. Best of luck!

UPDATE - The kitties are back to normal today. Spike and Rascal must have had a little disagreement yesterday.

It happens. My boys will be best friends one day and will hiss all the next day. I've yet to figure out why.

Good to hear things are back to normal today. Still keep an eye on Spike today just in case, but unless something seems "off", sounds like things are good again. :)

I am glad they are Friends again.;) Miss Tiggie my 5 year old, has NO respect for her older Brother Gizmo! He is 14 and I found her trying to Lay on him in order for him to Move off her SPACE on the bed! Of course, being the gentleman he is, he got UP! ;)
