What is wrong with the Mayor of Baltimore?

You know that meeting was actually an enormously positive and very unusual thing, right? You have three competing gangs - perhaps the most well known gang-on-gang hatred - coming together to urge calm and offer their support to get things back under control. Think about that. The bloods and the crypts sat down together in a room, discussed things, and spread word to their folks to knock off the crap. That's amazing and awesome. And yes, I would think that deserves at least a little bit of praise and appreciation.

They were probably all in the room, hands joined together singing Kumbaya. There are actually gullible people out there who believe these gangs were there to "help".

I will never be impressed by violent gang members and ISIS members/supporters.

No. The Bloods and the Crips made a truce and formed an alliance so they could "take out Baltimore cops". These gange are at the forefront of the destruction.

I was going to correct this as well.

I am so sickened this morning. I don't' think today is going to be a better day. I read that there is another "protest" scheduled today at the Security Square Mall at 2pm. The national guard needs to use force to put an end to this.

That's not entirely true. There's plenty of pictures of gang members protesting (not looting and rioting) together peacefully. There are tweets from reporters thanking gang members for protecting them.
There are also pictures of gang members involved in the rioting and tweets from reporters saying gang members were adding to the violence.
It goes both ways.

The picture a previous poster linked was an extreme conservative site's take on a picture that was showing those groups coming together to help the situation.
The source for the narrative that goes along with the picture is just as important as the picture itself.

The article you posted was from noon yesterday. Watching the news last night, you'd have heard that - in direct response to those "reports" - some church leaders reached out, resulting in the meeting that the Mayor and I were both talking about. And further reports that the "alliance" never existed in the first place. I'll try and search for an article, as my info is from watching the TV news (10 - 11:30 local NBC station, in case anyone really is curious...)

This was 1968 less than 2 decades after things like separate water fountains, sit in the back of the bus, negroes need not apply, etc. This is not the world we live in.
But it is. The racism just isn't as overt. Which almost makes it worse, since it's easier to overlook and say everything's fine, or black people do it to themselves.

What's nothing new and disgusting is Police forces getting away with using tactics like "rough rides" which result in a citizen's death

There hasn't even been a completed investigation yet on the cause of this man's death, but the media has already tried and convicted those cops and as a result has all the violence on their hands. Let's let the justice system take care of wrong doing. And don't even pretend that these thugs are looting stores and burning buildings to protest this case - it's a mob mentality with no respect for human life or property. But I guess if you've never had to work for what you have, why would you care about anyone else's home or store? We've had 50 years of policies that encourage dependence and single parent families and discourage personal responsibility so what do you expect? I just heard on the news now "they are just kids" again trying to excuse their behavior - wake up - if they are old enough to burn down buildings and throw bricks at policemen then they are old enough to go to jail.

I doubt it matters to many. Look at the title of this thread even with the statement being clarified. You still have people here saying the mayor wanted to allow people to destroy things.

So you can forgive the Nation of Islam's showing their ISIS pose at the riots because of the source of the site? You keep blowing smoke on the source while refusing to comment on what is clearly shown in the picture.

When does the racism card end? You have a black president, a black governor, a black mayor, black city government and over half the police force is black so if it's not working for you, then VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE not keep crying that the white man is keeping you down.
I cant even. :rotfl:

We've had 50 years of liberal policies that encourage dependence and single parent families and discourage personal responsibility so what do you expect?
Yea in all seriousness you probably won't like what I say since I, gasp, come from a single parent family!

Her exact words were "We also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that, as well," That doesn't sound like she wants calm and order to me. Of course now she is trying to backpedal but too bad we have videotape. She's another politician with an agenda to get votes.

The source is beyond distasteful and anything written on the site is not worthy of taking seriously. If someone wants to post links to extreme liberal sites I'd feel the same way.

Ambear - I'm right there with you. At first when I read it I was like "whaaat" but then I said "nope, I can't".

I personally didn't vote any of them into office but many thanks for assuming that I did. (not directed at you Ambear)

I think she worded it poorly and I'm sure it's going to be something she lives with wanting to take back for the rest of her life.

I'm not from Baltimore and had never seen the mayor until yesterday. Yes, she's a politician. The impression I got from hearing her speak last night several times was that she had seriously considered the situation, looked at how these conflicts were handled and escalated in the past and genuinely believed a different approach might yield better results. Sadly that has turned out to be incorrect.

How much of her decision was political, how much influenced by her race, how much influenced by her gender, how much influenced by her advisors, how much influenced by her own past experiences, etcetera, I cannot say. I tend inherently to be skeptical a good deal of the time. I had the sense I was watching someone who had made a genuine and sincere effort for a good outcome. I'm sorry it didn't turn out the way she hoped, no matter what type of politician, person or decision-maker she is. No doubt it would have been better for all concerned had the situation not gotten out of hand.

Whether you are far left, far right or sit exactly at 0 latitude and 0 longitude on the political equator, it does not matter. You refuse to comment on the picture showing the Nation of Islam members at the riot clearly posing with ISIS hand signals.

I agree. No man can keep me down. No man can keep you down. Work hard. Be a good person. It's 2015. You have the opportunity to choose your fate.

The only places that picture is being interpreted that way are extreme conservative sites.

When you have entire communities of fatherless families, things don't go very well. I am sure there are some families like yours that do very well with just one parent, but let's face it, the situation is not optimal.
