Now, I don't want to be a mean person, but I just thought I'd throw this out there.
A Guest approached me this morning, saying that she really wanted to talk to me (aka. I was wearing a Sparrow suit).
So, for some strange reason, she invites me into a trade. Thinking this to be one of them 'HSM costume for Sparrow' trades again, I thought I'd play nice.
==========
PirateEmery: How can I help you?
Guest-so&so: Can you be my friend?
Guest-so&so: I don't have many friends.
PirateEmery: Aye, I have too many friends already, list is full.
Guest-so&so: I don't even have a mummy or duh duh.
At this point, mean/witty Pirate comes out.
PirateEmery: You don't have a mummy or duh duh?
PirateEmery: They don't play VMK?
So, I basically just called her out in a small way, to show that VMK is just a virtual kingdom and you really don't have a mummy or duh duh in game unless your actual parents play. Lo and behold, I did not think I'd come up with the gem of:
(and I didn't bother to edit out the Guest number as I doubt you'll remember it number for number)
Is this Pirate making fun of new people? Perhaps, but it stems into a deeper question: why do people start playing VMK? What is VMK to them?
I started last-last summer as a way to roam about a virtual Disney Park. I got bored fast and didn't look back. Last April, I found a game called VMK and thought I'd give it a shot (it wasn't until later that I realized I had already created an 8 month old character). Now, I've always been a fan of the Disney Parks, as I love Disneyland with all my heart. I was looking for a way to exercise catharsis: to make me feel as though I was really there. But through the year, VMK has become something entirely different for me: sure, it's still about the Parks, but it has evolved into the friends. Summer of 2006 was amazingly fun, in terms of VMK. Pirate Month, Waterpark Month? It was so unbelievably fun! Remember when we'd all be secretly putting together Competition Slides? Where we'd have to kindly ask friends to leave, as we suspected them of spying? And when we'd go into friends' rooms trying to get a glimpse at their ride masterpiece? Last summer was absolutely awesome. Closing every night. Party every afternoon. Life was good.
But I'm sure what drew me to VMK was not the same thing that drew everyone else. I don't know why someone like the girl above joined VMK. She probably likes the pretend social interactions more than the game, as I can only assume from the conversation. She knew how to Dictionary Dance and say mummy and duh duh (and she knew that culture in the game), but she hadn't a clue as to what VMK was.
So, I can only assume that there are two different kinds of players: those that play Virtual Magic Kingdom, a Park away from the Parks, and interact with friends and have a good time in this virtual Disney world. And those that join the game to take part in cyber-relationships much like what they do in the other free online avatar games (isn't there a hotel-like one?).
So, I just wanted to share this experience with you. Either you laughed, or you cried, but hopefully you can take something to heart: how much do you love your VMK? What have you experienced in your time playing that has made it so fun and worthwhile?
Disclaimer: This has been yet another offensive Pirate thread.
