Because everyone keeps saying that the tax cuts are only for the rich, and the middle class picks up the rest, and because there is no clear cut definition of "rich", tell me what you think of as rich..

And please, I know that money doesn't buy happiness, but I'm honestly trying to get a clear picture of the way people see the caste system here. So where does "Rich" begin?

How much does a person (or couple) have to make for them to be wealthy in your eyes?

I said $500K, but I guess that's just an arbitrary number in my mind.

Well I think it would vary region to region. Here if you make 100,000 you are just about keeping your head above water where in other areas 100,000 you would be well off.... but as far as upper class here, I would have to say 500,000 and over.

I said $500K as well. Many in my neighborhood make well over 6 figures, many double and triple that, and aren't rich by any means...not with the housing costs here.

Same here. The tri state area is a killer financially.

I think it depends on where you live... what was considered middle class here in Atlanta is pure poverty in New York... :confused3

I agree. I think [in the South] if a family can sustain $200k for several years, they should be able to accumulate a great deal of wealth. I know that isn't true in other areas, but here...you can purchase a McMansion in the $300k range, and a real mansion for $500k-$1M. In my book, if you can really afford to live in a mansion, then you are rich. (Median home prices here are about $160k)

Of course, a lot of people live in homes they can't really afford.

I don't know if you can put a number to it. But I think "rich" is anyone who can afford anything that they want. They don't have to think about/worry about money.

Rich is being able to live the lifestyle you want on true passive income (i.e investment earnings or rental income).

If you need to go to work, you aren't rich!

I consider six figures rich, because that will get you a very nice life here in Nebraska. At least for me it would!

Rich? That is when you are sharing your life with someone you love, trust and have complete faith in. It is when your extended family truly wants to be with you and loves visiting and spending time with you. It is when you have good health with no major illnesses to contend with. It is when you have the ability to work, and the luck to have a job that you absolutely love. It is when you can give and share with others what they may need without worrying about your own circumstances.

Rich is not about money. Not at all.

I said 500K and up. My DH and I make 6 figures, but with the price of everything going up and our MASSIVE amount of student loans, we certainly aren't rich.

Rich to me is when you don't have to work and can fill your days with things you enjoy, not running the rat race.

Upper class is definitely over 500K

If most people are really picking 500k and sbove why is it always that people will vote for canidates that want to raise taxes or no give stimulus checks to those making 150k. I know here in CA where I live 150k does't go real far. My husband was out of work for over 3 months this year and I know we could of REALLY used the stimulus check but didn't get it and that was ok with nearly everyone I talked to. I don't think it is ok for any tax bracket to be paying the rates they are. My husband doesn't make over 500k a year because he didn't invest the time and effort into going to school to be a doctor or a lawyer or CEO not because anyone else held him back. We don't begrudge anyone who has keeping more of their OWN money They earned it, not us.

We are in the 30,000 bracket.
Here 100,000 would be upper class.
Cost of living is alot cheaper here too.
We paid only 52,000 for a very large house.
Maybe if we made more our idea of rich would change.:confused3

I voted above $500,000. I would consider that upper class but I really wouldn't even call it "rich". To me, rich would be over $1 million a year. :confused3
