I always like to try the native food of the places I travel to and I was wondering what Bahamian food is like and what is consists of?

A lot of very fresh seafood, and wonderful conch fritters.
Kalik is the local beer.

If you are looking for a great, local meal. Try conch fritters restaurant.
Close to the dock and very enjoyable.

I'll second that! We ate at Conch Fritters restaurant last month and had a grand time. Friendly, clean, a lot of fun eating their namesake. Just past the straw market and inland about a block.

:confused3 I saw on another post that its the animal that lives in a conch shell. Please tell me thats not true. The look like snails and are very slimy! ugh!!

Yes I just found out that they are the snails that live in the conch shells. But that is not very differrent from eating escargot or lobster, crab etc (they are all slimy, gross looking creatures that live in a shell).... If you have ever eaten any one of those and liked it then there is no reason to have a problem with this I would think.

True but yummy. And not slimy when cooked.

You can also get it deep fried. Try it, you'll be surprised. Pleasantly, I mean. ;)

Does it taste similar to clam chowder?
Depends on the kind of clam chowder you prefer. Somewhat like Manhatten but spicier. Very good. I like conch salad. Kind of like ceviche but with conch instead of fish

Just a pointer for those who may not know.........when ordering, the correct pronunciation is "conk" (like honk)

That's odd. Because it was pronounced "conch" with a "ch" according to the book and the movie of Lord of the Flies. :confused3

One entry found for conch.

Main Entry: conch
Pronunciation: 'kä[ng]k, 'känch, 'ko[ng]k

It is pronounced "konk" and yes, rhyms with honk. Another one, Cay is pronounced key. Learn something every cruise. Kathy :sunny:
