Boys and girls at a dance is an ADULT situation? :confused3 How many adults go to mixers? :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

5th graders ya! Just stupid idea to get them thinking in the way of gaining interest in dating so young. Hey do as you will, but I want my kids to be a lil older before they are introduced to that thank you. JMHO

Ya, I know you said 5th graders. :thumbsup2 I'm still not seeing what's wrong with some 11 year olds getting a little dressed up and having a dance. :confused3 I think it would be cute -- it's not like they'd be shacking up in a motel afterwards like prom or anything.

oh, wait, that was just my prom -- nevermind  :rolleyes1

:rotfl2: I thought so too, till I went in the dance and saw what was going on ... it wasn't so innocent as I thought it would be... and the kids were all about asking out and they DID slow dance, it was all about who got to dance slow and all that. I didn't find it cute at all. It def introduced them to the dating scene and I didnt like it at all.

i hate to dissapoint you, be they are introduced before the fifth grade.
you'll find quite a 4th graders that already "date".

I think Pre-K and kindergarten graduations are kind of dumb, too. It's really not much of an honor... I mean, how hard is it to "graduate" with a Kindergarten diploma, anyway? ;)

You finish K and then move on to 1st grade. Big woop.

:p

thats my point lol. but nough said, that just isn't happening in my house :)

I would have to agree that some people tend to go overboard. I was the mean mom on the block this month because my twin DS's are "graduating" from 8th grade and moving onto 9th grade. HELLOOOOOO...isn't that what you are supposed to be doing???? :confused3 Well, they thought that they needed to be picked up from the Jr. High in a limo and driven around town all day long since they were graduating. Another lady that I know is having an end of the year/birthday combo pool party for her son and that sounded fine to me but a limo? I told my kids to talk to me when they graduate from high school but preferably when they are graduating from college and then I would see about the limo. They thought I was just the meanest mom around. I told them it wouldn't be the last time they felt that way about me.

it didn't happen ay my house either.
it surprised me that so many partents thought it was " cute"
to see their 2nd-4th grader "dating"

I work at a pre-school and I chose not to have my students in caps and gowns. I agree that they have to have something to look forward to when they get older. We still manage to have a cute celebration, songs and diplomas. Parents can still be plenty proud of their kids without the cap and gowns. A lot of our surrounding communities have done away with proms this year because they were just getting too out of hand. Limos, $1000 gowns, hair & make up professionally done followed by expensive weekends out in the Hamptons. It's becoming a huge controversey around here.

Neither of my DS's attended their 8th grade graduation - the older one had a baseball tournament out of town... the younger one's is today and he chooses not to go. He's having a few friends spend the night afterwards, though.

They both took high school classes in 7th and 8th grade though, so I guess that takes some of the drama out of it.

I guess I see graduation (even high school) as expected. It's not like WOW I am so glad you made it!!!! Many people seem to react that way and it drives me nuts.

It's just not a big deal to me. My DH and I graduated from college on the same day - different schools. I did not attend either - I worked all day to make money for our honeymoon at Disney! Priorities you know!

When you're 5, it is a Big woop.
Tomorrow, my youngest son will be graduating from kindergarten. He'll be wearing a royal blue cap and gown and the girls will be wearing light pink. Next Friday, my oldest son graduates from 8th grade at the same school and he'll be wearing a navy blue cap and gown. They have an 8th grade Valedictorian and Salutatorian as well. I am looking forward to both events. I know not every school does it, but I'm glad ours does.

"dating", no, not cute.

Kids at a grade school dance, acting as normal 11 or 12 year olds, I would say is (or could be) cute. :)

I'm happy that our schools call the celebrations when you leave a school "promotion" ceremonies. That makes more sense to me when you are continuing on in the school system. I think the cap and gown prior to actual graduation is silly too.

Our kindergarten classes had an end of the year picnic until a few years ago when the parents started getting nutty about it - now it's a big deal. So, our school now has a kindergarten promotion ceremony and a 6th grade promotion ceremony.

My son is in 5th and graduating from elem. school. After the graduation, a group of students are taking limos and going to the country club for a DJ party. My DH and I discussed it and decided this was too "over the top".

I was really proud of my DS when he said he didn't want the limo or to go to the party since his best friend wasn't invited. :goodvibes He never knew that we weren't going to let him go anyway.

How exactly does a 2nd grader "date"? What is the behavior that these parents find "cute" that is :furious: to some people? I think I am confused.

Please tell me that people really don’t think that having a pre-school or K graduation means they don’t have “something to look forward to”?

“Sorry mom and dad, we can just skip my high school grad, I did the whole cap and gown thing when I was 5 so no sense in going through that again”.

Most high school seniors won’t even remember their pre-school/K graduation let alone allow it dampen the thrill of graduation!

Both my girls had preschool graduations. One was a small church ceremony for her class only. No cap and gown, it was very simple. The other had a large ceremony in church which included all the 4 yr old classes and they wore caps and gowns. Both were wonderful with neither being better than the other.

i agree that is cute. although our 5th grade dance most of the girls and boys
stood on either side of the gym.
there were a few "couples" that danced together.
