What is the South Beach Diet?

How can anyone live on only 20 grams of carbs on the Atkins? A glass of juice has more. And I can not live without juice.

I can give you a run down of what South Beach is but I warn you juice is not recommended!

SBD is a program where you eat good carbs and good fat. Phase 1 is the "induction" period where you detox your body from processed sugar and flour. You primarily eat eggs, low fat cheese, lean meats, nuts and vegetables (with several exceptions like corn). After Phase 1 which last 2 weeks, you enter Phase 2 where you slowly introduce good carbs back into your diet. Things like whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, oatmeal, fruits, brown or long grain converted rice, etc. You will stay on this Phase until you reach your desired goal. Then you enter Phase 3 which is maintenance.

What I like about this program is the flexibility and the delicous foods. I also like the fact that you eat three main meals a day, 2 snacks and dessert. Dr. A is very specific about not skipping dessert. Of course there's a catch, it has to be 75 calories or less. But that can be accomplished in many ways. My family has enjoyed a variety of foods and I have adopted many of our favorites to be SBD friendly including yummy desserts.

You mentioned juice and the SBD book is very specific about why juice is bad for you. If you want "orange juice" the whole fruit is much better for you because your stomach will have to work to break it down to get to the fructose (fruit sugar) where with juice, it turns right into sugar in your blood stream. After you get through Phase 1, the detox period, you will be utterly amazed and surprised how many beloved carb-laden foods you no longer crave. I never thought it could happen to me but it did!

If I forgot anything I'm sure a fellow SBDer will jump in and complete this info for you. I hope I was helpful. Let us know if you start South Beach. It really is a great program. I am thrilled with the 32 pounds I have lost in a little over 2 months and my DH has similar results.
