What is the Preferred Seating thread about?

I noticed the Preferred Seating for Aladdin, etc. This is my first trip, so I have no idea if I need preferred seating or how I would get it. Do you not just show up to shows and watch them? I know that I have to do something special to watch WoC (still working through that thread to figure it out), but this Aladdin one really confuses me!

Preferred seating is a bonus that generally comes with a Disney package.

For the Aladdin show there are two waiting lines. VIP for those with the preferred seating ticket and the general no preferred ticket. When the auditorium open for the show the VIP group are in first. This enables them to get up front seats.

We have sat in several different locations of the auditorium on the main floor and have never been disappointed with our view.
