What is the most annoying thing you encountered at Disneyland/California Adventures?

I didn't say it was malice but the simple fact that people were trying to seek shelter under them and CM's were folding them up was, regardless of reason, a very unkind thing to do.
Again, the idea of them being a lightning rod is in no way reduced by folding them up. The minimal distance people would still be from them would not provide any safety margin. Perhaps even more importantly, THERE WAS NO PREDICTION OR OCCURRENCE OF LIGHTNING THAT EVENING.
Also, many people just went on sitting at their table, in the light rain. What else could they do - they had food all spread out and were in the middle of meals.

FWIW, I got a call from Disney from a gentleman named Dick who said he had worked at attractions all over the park that had similar types of umbrella's and had never heard or seen such a thing. He went on to say he would escalate the matter to a management team for further investigation.

I'm not sure why you are so fired up about this, but I do have to agree that I seriously doubt lightning was a concern in southern California, especially in November. That doesn't happen.

Maybe lightning wasn't the issue, but I also don't think it was anyone intentionally being unkind to guests. My first thought as to why they might close them would actually be wind related, not lightning related.

Bottom line, for me, is that the CMswere likely just doing as they were instructed, not making the decision themselves. While I understand your feelings about it, I don't believe CMs did so to intentionally be unkind to anyone.

I guess I touched a nerve with you but I'm just trying to say I found it "annoying" which of course is the topic of this thread.
