What is the minimum age for gym & spa?

That amazed me on a FAMILY cruise ship. Spa I can understand, would never go there anyway. But DS was 16 on our cruise and in the middle of a conditioning program for high school baseball, he was VERY disappointed he could not use gym.
Actually, there IS one 30 minute session open to kids, but ONLY if they go with the kids club, and that didn't work because it was at 8:30 pm, and we had late seating. One 30 minute session on a 7 day FAMILY cruise!!! Disney needs to change that.

That's one of the things I like about Disney...it's not just geared and marketed to families. They have exclusive adult areas/activities too. Just as I can't go down the Mickey slide or make Flubber, there are areas set aside for the "big kids" too. I think they do a great job with marketing to/accommodating various age groups. I'll never forget the workout area on Voyager of the Seas...kids running out of the "adult" whirlpool directly onto the electric treadmills...I was waiting for someone to get electricuted. Not that most 16 year olds would do that, but you have to draw the line somewhere. That's why I've only sailed 4 times on RCCL and 44 on DCL.

Wow, and my friends think I'm wealthy because I've taken 7 cruises over the last 25 years !!!!! Wow, that works out to 5 1/2 DCL's a year since 1998!!
Everyone must know your name now on board.

I have to agree with Barb on this one.

We go as a family, we have a ds-15 (almost) and he loves the cruise. However that being said, during the day (and most of the night ;) ) he is out with friends.

Dh and I had an awesome time in the adult areas. Now I never made it to the gym, too tired from eating, but if they made the gym available to the younger set, I would imagine there would be all kinds of problems:

-kids who never worked out, all of a sudden need to go in and do not know what they are doing. Children (and even some adults) could get hurt. Ds did some weighlifting in an afterschool program and they were taught the proper way to lift and it was weeks before they were allowed to go on their own.

-kids using the equipment to play like Barb mentioned. Have you never seen AFHV, the kid playing on the treadmill and bam! the kid falls on his face.

-just the fact that kids using this area, the equipment will not be available to adults as easy. I know in walking in a gym, if there is not anything available, I go home. This kills one of the adult

Perhaps DCL could come up with a time or two when an adult would accompany someone 16 or 17. But I would make it very limited. And 8:30 is not the time. We had the same problem with our son and late seating.

THere is a teen session in the spa and a teen workout in the fitness area. Teens can also exercise at the sports deck area....run on the track, etc.

I like 18. I belong to a gym where kids can use the fitness center but only after they've completed a course (which costs a small amount) and pass a test demonstrating that they know how to use the equipment safely and responsibly. This isn't possible on the ship.

The fitness area is small compared to other ships the size of the Magic. It is usually available...but there may be a line for treadmills and elipticals on sea days. There are responsible, well trained teens, but I'm glad that I don't have to share the gym with them--including my teen.

I think what was most frustrating was most of the times he would have used the equipment, the place was practically empty.
I understand not wanting teens in, but why can't they set aside 2 hours a day for teen access? One 30 minute session in 7 days isn't much on a FAMILY cruise.
Except for the adult pool, and adult beach on Castaway Cay, all the other adult areas have hours that they are accessable to teens, actually, the majority of the time they are open to everyone. Just after 9 pm are they closed to those under 18.
And the pool and beaches aren't an issue since there are other pools and beaches for teens to use.

Yep, tvguy, you're pretty close to our average...we started out slow but did some extra cruises right around Y2K. Now our average is 5 to 6. I love the Wonder because it has become like our vacation home at sea :goodvibes

I completely agree w/ TVguy on this issue. Offering the gym for an hour in the evening for only one day on a 7 day cruise is not good enough. Most adults and teens who like to work out do so everyday or at least every other day. Most the time on our cruise the gym was not being used to its potential. And when they have the Magic in drydock next they are expanding the gym :confused3
