What is the HUGE deal with straws?!?!?

I’m new to Facebook groups, and nearly every day there is an outcry about paper straws at the parks and a ton of negative posts. (Leaving some of these groups, because most of it IS negative anyway).

Now I know they were removed a while ago and replaced with paper straws, and with a drink with a lid, straws are nice to have. But do people really have such an affinity for drinking out of a straw that they have to decry the lack of a good straw? It makes me laugh, but it it also puzzles me. I always bring a reusable stainless water bottle, and I don’t drink sodas where I guess people want a straw, but in my life at home I can honestly say that I don’t own a drinking straw.

I think it could be a minor annoyance of course, but I just had to share here my surprise that this is a huge topic of outrage on some Facebook Disney Groups. I get the dismay at higher prices, lower housekeeping standards, lack of trams, lack of parades and character meets, etc.

But straws seems to really be the biggie.

Straws are really important if you have young kids. That said, my kids have no problem with paper straws so I’m not really sure what the big deal is. If there were no straws, then I would get it.

IMHO, just give me a lid I can drink out of like those we have had for years with to go coffee.

I’ve yet to meet a paper straw that didn’t break down before I finished my drink. That’s the complaint about paper straws. They don’t hold up long enough to consume the drink.

I pretty much dump whatever drink I get into my reusable drink bottle……

The end that is in the drink gets very soft and closes off before you finish your drink. It is best to ask for more than one.

Yes, I guess that’s what I assumed that people would do.

I hate disposable anything, and would like to see more reusable items and less trash, so even getting a cup of water and then pouring it into my bottle is wasteful to me, so I try to get it at drink filling stations if possible like they have in airports. I”m also not one to walk around with a cup of anything aside from my morning coffee if heading off to the parks, but I do see people all over the parks carrying their drinks with them.

But to have a drink at a QS where you’re sitting down, do people really use/need straws? I get it for disabled people or young children, but in my real life I never see a typical adult drink out of a straw, so that’s why I was wondering at this huge outcry.

I HATE paper straws because they disintegrate in my drink and I’m not a fan of drinking a cold drink with ice without a straw because I don’t like the ice crashing into my mouth/teeth when I take a sip.
all that being said, I would never think to go to FB and complain about Disney not providing the kind of straws I like.
I just bring my own from home.

I guess it depends on where you live. Here it is quite common for people, including adults, to drink using straws.

My daughter and I use straws often and just don't like the way the disintegrate into our drinks, both for the ease of drinking but also the possible chemicals being added to our drinks. We use reusable straws all the time at home but when out, use the ones offered where we pick up our drinks.

The sugarcane straws at Joffrey's are awesome! Hard and tasteless like a plastic straw. They are made from sugarcane fiber.
Lorenae I commend you for bringing a reusable bottle everywhere you go and scrappingontario for bringing straws. I'm unfortunately not that evolved yet.

Paper straws, while I deal with them, are just not favorable. We were just in Vegas and they had paper straws (they had that in March as well, can't remember if they had that in June 2019 when we went though) and yes even the thicker ones tend to breakdown quick enough and/or bend too easily. FWIW Vegas had better quality paper straws than DLR did when we visited DLR twice in 2019.

While I understand that one person is perfectly capable of bringing a reusable straw with them I would think it's also understandable the complaints about paper straws.

I'm a bit confused that the OP hasn't seen people drinking from a straw. That's like extremely common and in pretty much all places I've visited. In recent years with legislation the waiter in places with tougher rules may not offer you a straw unless you ask but the practice of drinking out of a straw is very common and hardly limited to disabled or young children. Truthfully for a variety of sugary or acidic drinks it's better to drink from a straw as it means less time for it to sit in your mouth on your teeth.

Wow, in my grown up life, everywhere I go, adults are drinking out of straws. Soft drinks and water. Not alcohol, lol
My co-workers drink out of straws when we go out to eat.

Paper straws don't last long.
But there was a not-plastic straw that I think we had at Universal Studios. Or maybe it was close by. It was made out of plants and was fully compostable. Let me see if I took an extra (it was wrapped in paper)

We must drink our drinks faster than many. We have not had any issues with the paper straws.
Most of the time, I don't even care about a straw. When our kids were younger, straws were magic and a must! Now, that they are in their 20's, not a big deal. For those upset, I get it. Glad I'm past that time.

You never go to restaurants or get fast food? Literally every fast food restaurant you order a drink from hands you a drink with a lid and a straw. If you sit down and eat at a restaurant and get a fountain drink, the waiter is going to almost always hand you a straw. Maybe you run in weird circles.


But as for paper/plastic, I prefer plastic, but paper does the job on most fountain drinks. On frozen drinks or milkshakes, they are terrible. Granted I have seen a couple large diameter ones recently, so maybe they are figuring that out.

Not that organized either! We use reusable straws at home but not when out. LOL, didn't want to take credit for being that organized!

I like using straws as my teeth are sensitive to the cold. Esp if I get a frozen drink. Paper straws are horrible for frozen drinks.

At home, hardly ever use a straw. At disney, get drink , eat and then walk around carrying drink. We like the lid and straw to keep things out of cup. Also the lid adds to the stability of the cup.

The ones we had at DLR were much thinner and basically the paper was coming off in your mouth To be fair they aren't the only place we've experience thin, too flimsy of paper straws.

The place (not at Disney) that seems to have found a workable model for the disposable straws is Chick-fil-A.

Paper straws suck. They're a lousy product. They don't work very well. They change the taste of whatever it is that you drink through the straw. And after a very short period of time, the paper straw starts to break down, so it doesn't work as well, and then you end up having to chuck the straw, take the lid off of your drink, etc., etc.

I think that having to bring a reusable straw with you is stupid.
