What is the "going rate" for renting DVC points?

Hi all,

This is my first post as I've found this forum in trying to plan our first family vacation to Disney. Rentint points seems like an attractive option for us - we're looking at either this fall or next year. It was suggested to me that the week before Thanksgiving would be good as it would still be warm, but not entirely crowded. Also, we'll have myself, wife, 7yo daughter, 5yo son, and 1yo son. It sounds as though an OKW studio would be a good choice b/c of the room size and since our youngest would be <3 it wouldn't be a problem having 5 in the room. Does all this info sound correct?

Now, on to my original question, I saw some points listed on ebay and after talking to the person directly, she quoted me a price that works out to $14/point. We're looking at staying for about a week. Does that price seem high/in-range?

I tried searching the forums for OKW, but got no results and I didn't see any current postings for rent for OKW that listed a cost. Any help you all could provide would be greatly appreciated!

That's much too high. On the Rent/Trade board you will see that the going price is $10-$12 per point. $12 is considered a little pricey, but $14 is way too much unless you are taking a reservation that is right at Easter, christmas, or some other time where all the rooms are already rented.

I think 5 people the ages you have suggested is too many for a studio even at OKW. There will be two queen sized beds and a nice big bathroom, but you will need to find your own bedding for the 5th person unless your 3 year old can still sleep in a Pack N Play. I'd suggest you get at least a 1 bedroom and utilize the sofa cushions in the living room as an extra bed for the smallest one. That way you will also have a full kitchen and laundry room, and will need to pack less, and will be able to save with doing at least breakfast and maybe a few other meals in the kitchen.

About the kitchen - I thought a studio had a kitchenette? So I assumed that it would have a fridge and maybe a small stove and microwave. Is that a bad assumption? What the difference between the kitchette in the studio and the kitchen in a 1-bedroom?

Studios have a mini kitchen and would work for you since you are allowed to have 5 with one child under 3. They have a small refrigerator, microwave, toaster and a small kitchen table.

A one bedroom has a full kitchen with all ammenties. It is atleast double the points so, it would be a lot more expensive.

I've just made a deal with a member for $11.50 a point. It's someone I've rented from before and they are going to do day-by-day reservations for me.

While it's a little high, I was very happy with her service the first time and this time she offered to do it day by day.

Frankly it's worth every penny dealing with someone who "has it together", but I don't think I would go as high as $14/pt.

The difference between the kitchenette and the kitchen is significant. The kitchenette has an under counter fridge, small microwave, toaster, and coffee maker. The 1 bedroom has a full size kitchen with full size appliances and a full size laundry room in the unit with full size appliances. When you consider those things and the full sized covered porch and in room Jacuzzi, it SHOULD be double the points, and is well worth it. Sorry, I guess I'm a "studio basher", because I dont think they are much better than a regular hotel room.

With children the ages yours are, I would definitely suggest getting a 1 bdrm rather than studio......believe me, after spending all day in parks, etc. the last thing you want is cranky children when it's time for dinner. With a full kitchen, on those days when the kids are just too tired to go out to eat you can really be comfortable making a meal right in your room........with a studio the only things you can make would be stuff in the microwave and the frig is really very small.......no freezer compartment to really keep anything frozen just a small area for an ice cube tray, really (think very small dorm size frig).
Yes, while the points do cost more.......you really will save on eating out. Don't know if you'll have a car or not, but, you can do a bit of grocery shopping on your own if you do. If not, there are several grocery shopping services who will shop and deliver your order right to your resort for about $20. Not to mention, with a 1 bdrm you also have a washer/dryer right in your unit. IMO it's definitely worth the extra points for the convenience of having both a kitchen and w/d, especially with younger children. For the extra $200 or so, you will not regret it because you will save money on meals and also, have a much more relaxed vacation. One word of caution, please be careful renting points on Ebay......you would be much better off checking the Rent/Trade board on this forum.

If I had 3 young ones with us, I would want a 1 bedroom, for naps and adult sanity! OKW 1 bedrooms are wonderful.

Another huge consideration should be how difficult it is when you go back for a "nap" for the kids and you are all in the same space. With the 1 bedroom, the kids can be napping on the bed while Mom and Dad relax in the living room/kitchen or porch. No need to worry about being quiet, since they will be in a seperate room.

I think 1-br are out from a cost standpoint. Looking at the point charts, a 1 bedroom would be 90 points more, which would be more than the original points needed for a studio. Plus, my wife actually doesn't necessarily want an "apartment/condo" style room. We're probably going to do the dining plan (I'm assuming I can buy it when renting points from someone), and just plan on eating out except maybe for breakfast/lunch which could be in the room and serviced from a mini fridge and microwave.

Now that I've looked over the resorts, I'm leaning toward saratoga springs since it has the water play area, which would be great for a 1-year old (assuming he's walking by then), the zero entry pool for the kids, and the waterslide.

Transportation seems about the same btwn OKW and SSR based on the info pages here. A bit less convenient than other resorts, but we'd likely have a car and could drive to the parks if we wanted (I believe I read parking at the parks is free when staying at a DVC).

I like studios - they are small but just fine for one or two.

but Cruelladeville is definitely right for this site $14 is too high.

the only time charging that much is Thanksgiving week with a standard view studio at BWV.

OKW is an easy one to get - most of the time.

Driving to the parks is not necessarily easier or less time than busing. That is especially true of MK. When you drive to MK, you have to park at the TTC and take a monorail or boat to the park. When you take a bus from OKW or SSR, you are deposited right at the park entrance. The only park that MIGHT be easier and quicker to drive than bus would be Animal Kingdom.

Water facility. While SSR has the zero entry and water fountain area, OKW has a great sandlot that is great for the toddlers. There is also a great sandcastle slide for the older kids that gets rave reviews from most. Our grandkids and guests prefer the sandcaslte to the slide at SSR. One big advantage of SSR is the proximaty to DTD, and while OKW is nearly as easy access to DTD, it is nice that you can see it from SSR. The biggest difference between SSR and OKW if you are set on a studio is the bed configuration. At OKW you will have 2 queen sized real beds. At SSR you will have one queen sized real bed and a full sized pullout sofa. There is also significantly less bathroom space at SSR.

I had been chargeing $12.50 a point for 10 years, but after the dues assesments came out, I have raised my charge to $14.00 I do not rent to persons for less. I know that you can possibly find points for 10-12 each nut is it worth it to save $100? I almost never rent on this website, I have enough repeat renters and word of mouth to rent any points I have availble. In fact my Dec. 2008 points are all rented. You don not need to give away your points at 10-12 each. Why should someone be able to rent an OKW studio for $400 for a five night stay or $800 a week for so much of the year?

I rent every four years. Just like when I buy anything else I compare prices. But with that said I want quality also. With this year I’m not paying $10.00 a point and I’m not paying $14.00 a point. I think finding someone you are comfortable with is the important factor. Take some time and read up on these boards.

We had a studio at SSR over Christmas in 2007 with me,DW, DS(5),DS(4), DS(7mos.) We had plenty of room. OKW would have even more room. We would fold up the sleeper sofa in the morning, go to the parks or swim. When we came back, we had plenty of room.
