What is the "flag family" at WL? What do they do? How long does it last? Etc.

A family gets picked to do a flag ceremony each day. Not too sure about it but i think it's geared toward families with kids.

It is reserved for guests staying at WL. You can sign up your name for an available day at guest services.

On your day, you are then expected to be at the WL lobby at 8am. The flag guide will then take you up to WL's rooftop (lots and lots of flying bugs :teeth: )

Then you will raise the 5 flags one by one - USA flag, State of FL flag, WL flags. Then you get a chance to take pictures up on the rooftop (the view is amazing, btw!) and afterwards you're taken down to the lobby, passing the concierge lounge.

You are then given a certificate that states that you were flag family for that day.

It's a really lovely thing to do. We did it last year and the kids had a blast.

We did it Veteran's Day 2003. That was a great honor for us, in memory of my dad.

I don't think you need to be a family with kids, it's geared for anyone that wants to raise the flags. My DS was taught how to handle the flags with respect, the order that must be maintained in raising the flags, and that the American flag is raised the highest.

They are the only flags raised in WDW that visitors can help with. The flags are raised there in a ceremony because WL is part of Fort Wilderness.

Be sure to ask when you check-in, that gives you a better chance of having a day available. Last year we were on the waiting list, but nobody cancels.
