What is the difference between transferring and renting points. I know someone who doesn't own could only rent but why would someone offer to rent points only and not transfer or vice versa? Just trying to figure this whole thing out.

A transfer of points can ONLY be done to another DVC Member. "Renting Points" is really a misgnomer since points have no value except to the member who controls them in their account. Non-members are able to rent a reservation made by a DVC member.

Once points are transferred into your DVC account, they are YOUR points and may be used as you choose. A reservation rented to anyone else (member or non-member) will be under the control of the member who makes the reservation up until the time you check-in at the resort - which means the reservation could be modified or canceled by that member until you have checked-in.

In short, non-members can ONLY rent a reservation made by a member. Points transferred to another member become the points of the member who now enjoys them in his/her account.

You can only transfer once per UY. A transfer to me gives me your points to use as I wish, subject to the fact that transfered points retain their UY and home resort advantage.

If you transfer points into your account, are you responsible for the maintenance fees too?

Responsibility for annual dues remains with the orginal owner of the points when there is a transfer.

One more thing, according to the Public Offering Statement, no compensation can be made for transferring points because they have no cash value.

why would someone offer to rent points only and not transfer or vice versa?

current pts may be transferred, but banked and borrowed pts cannot be transferred.

current/banked/borrowed pts can all be used to make a reservation...and that reservation can then be rented out.

if you rent a reservation and the renter trashes the room or manages to leaved charges unpaid, you as the owner of the pts would be responsible for the charges.

if you transfer the pts to another owner, they would be responsible for any issues related to reservations made with those pts.

Thanks for the clarification on transfers vs. renting
If I have 74 pts left for the 2011 year and 150 for 2012 would I need to rent a reservation for the total 224?
Planning a Disney Cruise in March 2012 and hope to use my Disney pts to cover some of the costs
