I've often wondered what the deal with Topher was too, especially since the castmembers rarely spoke of him when talking about each other. I've always loved him (yes, I have a thing for nerds...remember? Topher, Clay, Chicken Little.... 
), and I've actually seen him in person a few times (mostly at tapings of talk shows). He comes across as lowkey and kinda goofy in a very normal, down to earth way. Like, I remember in one interview with Leno (I think?) he was talking about how he's not into the party circuit, just likes to sort of lounge around at home and play board games and stuff. And he said it in a very self-deprecating way, like he knew he was a big nerd about it, but he just didn't care. My impression is that the other cast members like being part of young Hollywood (which includes the parties and the clubs and whatnot) and Topher just wasn't really that interested in that angle of it. Sort of like those actors who actually ARE in it for the "art" and only the art....they don't want to be famous.
On a side note, there's this girl I spent my teen years working with who went on to become a dental hygienist. I see her randomly, but we don't keep in regular touch. The last time I saw her, we were talking about work, and she was like, "you'll never guess whose teeth I clean...."
Turns out, and I guessed correctly, she cleans Topher's teeth. His parents still live in Darien (and I actually think he's moved back East since he finished with the show), and he never stopped getting his teeth cleaned up here!! She said he's VERY "cool" (like, lowkey cool) and she didn't even realize it was him until someone else said it. Obviously, I let her know that I'm available to be her assistant (untrained, but available
) the next time he strolls in for a cleaning.
