What is the deal with School Bread?

I think it is just one of those tomato tamato things

I had Schoolbread for the first time this year and loved it. European style pastries are different from what we are accustomed to. To me many bakeries and grocery stores sell cupcakes, pies or cookies with digustingly sweet buttercream and ultra moist cakes with the pudding added in them.

Alot of people discover they dislike Dole-Whip too. It is always fun to try new things.

I hope you find something better next time! ;)

Used to be my most favorite food on property... We would get a couple on our way out of EPCOT, stick them in the fridge and enjoy the next morning for breakfast. Broke my heart when Disney redid it a couple of years ago.

I don't like school bread because of the coconut but love the sweet pretzels and Cloudberry Horn in Norway. If my husband is with me, he has to get the lefse. Both of our Dads are Norwegian and we grew up with lefse.

And then he complains about having heartburn the rest of the evening. LOL

Im an "old timer". Schoollbread used to be a thing of beauty. I was larger, moister and had only white coconut. It was a must do for every trip. About 4 years ago they changed it. Made it smaller with toasted coconut and less filling. I tried on last trip and was underwhelmed with it. Too bad that they changed it.

There was a thread back when the change came about which posted before and after photos of the schoolbread. Stark difference. The current version is definitely much smaller, has brownish icing and toasted coconut rather than white icing and white coconut.

if the OP goes and gets another one, they won't get anything different than they've already had. If you didn't like it, don't waste your time and money getting another in the hopes it will change.

Same here! I loved the old version and got a couple every trip. I tried the new version one time, several years ago when it first came out, and was very disappointed. I haven't had one since.

Well, I must have had the old version, because i had it in 2002. It was just like everyone says about the new one, lol.....very dry/stale and I failed to see why people raved about it.

I'm used to European pastries and don't need things sickly sweet, but this just had the consistency that made it seem like something you did with "old bread" to make it palatable. I haven't bothered to try it again since, but if they changed it for the worse....I'm glad I haven't given it another try!

Except that BEASLYBOO posted that she tried one in June and in August, both after the changes were made, and they were very different from each other.

Well, as I said, we loved 'em. :) More for us!

I'm sure freshness has everything to do w/ texture. Dense if it's older, light if it's fresh. MAybe? We've only had them on one visit so I'm not privy to anything before 2010, so I wouldn't doubt they've changed it, like all Disney food, for the worse. Ours was in between. I ordered one one our last visit and found it OK but I personally like sweeter things. DH on the other hand LOVED it. Same bread, different reactions. DH instead we go back a few days later and get him one for himself. Different palettes for us.
