What is the COOLEST FEATURE in your house?

I love our secret room (as we call it) if you go into my kitchen and open the door to the pantry, you can walk into our pantry and inside the pantry is another door that goes into another room. It is cool, DH uses it as a get away room.

This is so silly, but I'm thrilled we have a basement!!! We're renting for a few years and I had no clue where to put the litter box. There's a basement and viola, there's where the litterbox goes! :)

When we renovated last year we had 4 custom oak lockers built for each of our kids.

They are all on one wall and are 3 ft wide and 8 ft high. They all have shelves and hooks in them and the kids keep all of their coats, boots, shoes, school bags, sports equipment - everything.

They are the best things we ever built!

I wanted to add one more thing for you to consider. My girlfriends parents have a gas feed on their patio for direct hook-up to the barbeque. They love it since they never have to mess with exchanging gas tanks. That's an option that you don't see every builder offering.

We've got that for the built in BBQ. The shut off is underneath, and I do shut it off when a hurricane is on it's way.

We had our builder add this when we bought our house. We really don't have any unique or cool features. THe best thing I like about our house is the location.

There is nothing really special about my house. I do have a deep jacuzzi tub with a skylight over it. It is nice to soak in the tub while watching the stars.

That is nice!

I have a friend who has a storage area under her stairs that was turned into a storage area for her kids. It's the area that's often wasted from the stairs going up. The builder put a door in off the foyer and there are hooks and bins for the kids coats, school bags, etc. A wonderful, convenient place for them to put their stuff.

Mine put their things in the mud/laundry room, but the room already is too small, has the washer/dryer and the litterbox, so there's only room for a hanging rod, coat rack, and an elfa bin storage. Oh, and I have a shoe holder on the door for gloves and hats, which helps. Not enough room, but better than nothing.

Right now I'd say it's the 3 fireplaces in our < 1500 sq ft home. LR, den, and the finished basement all have them (although we've never used the one in the basement, since it's just a mess of a playroom for the kids now- it'll be nice when we update it as a more adult space!)

Soon it'll be our new master bedroom/bath addition, and the huge new deck with hot tub!

We just renovated and it still boring compared to all you guys!

We were ectastic just to get a doorbell installed! :rotfl:

I guess we have a bunch of neat features, and one in progress. I'll only inflict a few of them on you!

The end of our kitchen island faces the dining area and we put a TV inside that end of the island.

DH built a 17 foot, stone, Rumford style, wood-burning fireplace in the livingroom. The fireplace divides the living room from the kitchen/dining and you can walk around either side to get to the kitchen/dining. On the back wall of the fireplace that faces the kitchen, the center is brick with a bordering arch of stone, and we have a cast iron woodstove hooked up there. The woodstove heats the house very nicely. We have another in the walkout lower level and the furnace hasn't been on all winter.

In progress: Dh is building a tunnel walkway that will go from the house basement to the basement of our detached barn/garage, about 50 feet away. The top surface of the walkway will be a sidewalk to the 1st floor side door.

We have a little outbuilding that looks like something from Frontierland. It has wood siding, old mullioned windows and door, and a "loading dock" along the front that has a bunch of antique crates and barrels, and an old fashioned park bench to sit on while you wait for the stage coach!

Lighted light switches :) Makes it great when you're tired and trying to find the light switch to go to the bathroom. My husband installed them....he's so nifty. My son would say it's the heater/light fixture in the bathroom though LOL

The coolest feature of my house is a second-story screened porch that looks out over our little creek/ravine and wooded yard.

My laundry room on the 2nd floor! No lugging stuff downstairs!

When we built this house 7 years ago we really tried hard to make it a house for our speical needs son...
my favorites

Laundry room on the bedroom floor with a huge counter top to fold and room for 5 laundry baskets so things can be neatly sorted

Intercom so we can hear DS in the living room, kitchen and our room while he is sleeping.

Open kitchen so we can see DS just about everywhere he goes.

Pool house with AC and TV for son. We can still sit by the pool or swim and he can sit on the sofa and watch movies without overheating.

Location. We have a huge lot but our neighbor is my sister-in-law who built next door!!! :)

the sunroom - love all those windows, jacuzzi - trying to get DH to install the hand held sprayer (the only I don't like about it is cleaning without a sprayer) , and 2nd floor laundry - its the best!!! No more trips to the basement. :sunny:

:wizard:

My house doesn't have that many really cool features...most of the time, I am happy if I can find an outlet in a place where I need one to be. However, our yard is cool. The people who lived here before us were landscapers, so in the back of the yard are some large trees and winding in between them is a path. On either side of the path, flowers and plants bloom constantly from spring to early fall. It is really pretty and relaxing for me as I look out my kitchen window. Of course, the rest of the yard is the neighborhood baseball/soccer/basketball/football and all other childhood games arena. That sometimes conflicts with the serenity.

I'm with you Liamandcali. I think my backyard is my favorite place to be. We did a lot of renovations a few years ago. Added French sliders from the family room and dining room to a multi-level deck. Installed a spa right into the deck. There is a two level pond with waterfall and a big brick paver patio. I love to fill up the gardens and pots with annuals come Spring. When it's all "de-winterized" I just sit outside and enjoy! :cloud9:

What is the purpose of this hidden room? You say that kids used it to enter your home so it also has a door to the outside?

My favorite features would be my huge tub in my bathroom and also that we have alleys behind our homes to our garages. I never saw alleys when I lived in Houston and I just love them!

We're not certain what the origional use for this room was but we turned it into a hurricane shelter. And it opens *underneath* our house...*not* to the outside. There is, however, a door from the outside of house that leds underneath the house. That's where the neighborhood kids gained entry. Then they tunneled their way through the chamber into the main part of our house. At the time this happened, we didn't even know this existed nor did the realtor! Old houses sometimes have a few surprises!

Our home was built in the 50's so we don't have a lot of the newer stuff. I do love our hardwood floors and crown moulding throughout the house. My favorite feature is the built-in china cabinets in the corners of the dining room. My china looks like it's on display in a department store in there.
