What is the best washing machine brand for quality and customer service?

We have a service contract with our energy provider, he told my 5 years is the max for washers and dryers.
I would be livid if I only got 5 years from a washer or dryer. I know parts of our LG were under warranty for 10 years, but it's 12 years old now, so out of all warranties.

Speed Queen makes great washers? Where can you find Speed Queen washers? Because my mom saw one in Home Depot but it was pricey. My grandma was a big fan of Maytag washers and it used to be her go-to brand for appliances but my mother looked at Maytag washers and they have gone downhill now. How about Kenmore washers? Are they one of the best washers?

Talked to my neighbor and I don’t think her complaints are specific to Speed Queen.

This was her first washer in a long time and she doesn’t like how they don’t fill with water anymore or how the lid locks once the wash starts. Those are behaviors of most new washers.
yep this was my issue with the top loader we got rid of. It had just an impeller plate at bottom and not an agitator. Even when using the deepwater setting not everything would get wet and we were left with soap spots on clothes. Before we got rid of it we were reduced to using a teaspoon of detergent and even then the clothes would still have soap spots on them. We ended going back to a front loader. They do not use any more water but because of the design everything tumbles through the water so everything gets wet and no soap spots.

A few machines back I got a top loader since I had not been happy with my front loader. Hated it! Half the time clothes would come out with dry areas on them. Went back to a front loader :( ... which I still didn't love. As I said a couple of posts back, I got a Speed Queen when we moved 2 years ago. Top loader, dials/knobs instead of electronics, FILLS with water, and does NOT lock (so I can throw in that last item I had forgotten!) There isn't anything that I don't like about it.

You can find Speed Queen retailers here: https://speedqueen.com/where-to-buy/

I had two Maytag front loaders that I was not happy with. Kenmore washers and basically all of their major appliances were great 30-40 years ago. They are outsourced and made by different companies, and this is what I found currently: Washers and Dryers: Nearly all new top-load Kenmore washers and matching dryers are made by Whirlpool Corp. Front-load machines and stacking dryers are made by LG.

Depends on what you consider pricey. Appliances (and their parts) have gone up, so what you paid maybe 10-15 years ago is going to be much more today.

Yeah, but I believe Speed Queen does tend to be more expensive than the Maytag/Whirlpools and even like Samsung appliances that you find in the big-box stores. They do have a reputation for quality though, and are mostly sold through smaller appliance dealers (which are also generally more expensive). I don't have one, but as far as I have seen, if you want that "old-school" style washer, and one that will last a while, Speed Queen is a good choice.

I got a new washer and drier in Nov/Dec 2020. I hate them both! I got a Maytag toploader and I swear half the clothes have to go through twice to get clean and the drier needs at least 2 cycles of over an hour to get the clothes dry. And no, I am not overfilling my washer and drier. Like others, I do not feel like there is ever enough water to get the clothes clean and I do not like the locking lid. I keep hoping they will both die! I will be looking at Speed Queen next time. I had those in an old house and they were so much better.

I owned a residential care home for a number of years. We ran our standard washer and dryers almost constantly during the day doing the laundry for 15 clients plus household towels, table cloths and bedding. I found Kenmore was the most dependable and GE was the least. We put an awful strain on those machines and the Kenmore's held up the best. I don't know if they even exist anymore since Sears went under, but in my own house all my appliances were Kenmore and you couldn't kill them.

It was that way for over my adult life until I moved into my current apartment where they supply the appliances and I no longer care how long they last.

Our washer just broke. We only had it 5 years. We got it delivered March 16th of 2020 (I only remember the date because it was the first day the schools shut down for COVID). DH did a lot of research and found LG had better reviews than most other brands. My mom has an LG and it has been working great so that is what we went with. We will finally get the new one delivered tomorrow after not having one for 2 weeks.

Not sure Kenmore EVER actually made their own appliances. For years and years their washers and dryers were made exclusively by Whirlpool. I have a Kenmore side by side refrigerator, It was made by LG. It was funny, they had it side by side on the store floor with the LG version. The difference? The Kenmore name tag, and a price that was $200 lower!

We have LG front loaders and I feel like I must be a minority but overall we have been pleased.... so pleased that the set before this was also LG front loaders and when they bit the dust, we bought the current model of the exact same thing. However the main selling point to me on Round 2 was that, even though Lowe's tried to say they wouldn't, the new set fits perfectly on top of my original pedestals and I didn't have to purchase a new set of those.

I cannot speak about service- thankfully we only needed "service" once and DH is very hands on and was able to take it apart and fix that issue himself.

Speed Queen! It is the best. When we downsized and went to our new home, first thing we did was buy another Speed Queen. Trust me on this one.

Whirlpool bought out Maytag a while ago. When I was shopping for my washer in 2019 I saw that Whirlpool and Maytag machines were the exact same but the Maytag ones had a higher price. I still ended up with Maytag and have liked it a lot. Maybe that model got a higher rating than the Whirlpool as I'm not sure what made me get the one and not the other. A friend just got a Samsung and likes it - it sings a song when it finishes which was unexpected.

To be fair, when the kids were growing up I did laundry 7 days a week, 365 days of the year. 5 kids who played sports and 2 who danced, 2 - 3 clothing changes a day. There will be 5/6 of us here this summer.

Yes, when our now 34 and 38 year old kids were playing soccer, baseball and having to wear school uniforms, my wife did an average of 33 loads a week. We only got 15 years out of our Whirlpool Washer and dryer that we bought when we got married, and 15 years from the Maytags that replaced them in the middle of the kids growing up.

From what I understand, you are correct. I don't think there ever was a "Kenmore" factory. They jobbed out the manufacturing to other well known companies but did have their own specifications of how they were to be built. It's not different than buying a can of green beans with the Walmart brand name sitting along side a can of Libby's green beans right next to it for more money. (I'm just guessing about Libby's doing it), it could be any of the other canners.

The point is that at one point Sears maintained strict guidelines for the quality of what they sold and if it were LG then LG would rely on the massive amount of people that will only buy a name brand and not a store brand. It helps the manufacturer to clear out excess and the stores to have their own brands. If it were poorer quality they wouldn't have repeat sales. It's a win win for both the retail outlet and the manufacturer. They absolutely always end up selling the same amount no matter who's name is on the can or the machine. With the exception of the massive number of times that they were practicing bait and switch sales. Where they would advertise something on sale and when you went they were suddenly out of stock of that sales item and it would take literally months, they said, for any of the missing item were to be restocked. Then say, but we have this great item for just a little more than that sale one and we have that in stock.

I had that happen twice. Once before I was married and I went in to buy an acoustic Guitar. When I got there they had one on display but couldn't sell it because it didn't have a Guitar Case that went with it. I said can't you order one and sell me the display since you don't have any here to sell. Oh, no we can't do that, they said. I asked to see a manager and after about 20 minutes of him telling me that the couldn't sell me that specific Guitar and my continuously asking why not, he finally decided to sell me that one but it might take months to get the case. I still said, I'm in no hurry so lets do this. I took it home and miracle of miracles I got a phone call the next day telling me that they found the case in the backroom and to come and pick it up. I still have both Guitar and Case that was 55 years ago.

The next time after I was married, we found ourselves in need of an upright freezer. Again on sale and out of stock the first day of the sale. They spent what seemed like hours telling my why paying more for the one in stock was better because it had a thermostat that allowed thing to freeze slightly quicker, where the one I wanted only had one, which, of course was below zero. I kept insisting that I want the one on sale in spite of their telling me that I would take a month or longer to get the one I wanted. I just said, that's fine I don't have anything to put in it yet. At the time we lived in a mobile home and the only place we had to put it was in a 10 X10 metal storage shed out back. Having plenty of time to wait I proceeded to run wiring from my breaker box to the shed outside just for the freezer. Yet another miracle happened, three days later they called and told me that the freezer had arrived and made an appointment to deliver it. For two years it chugged away keeping thing frozen solid during summer temperatures of over 100 degrees in that shed. When we bought our house we took it with us and it resided in our basement for 26 years and was still happily freezing away. I might still be for all I know as I left it in the house when we divorced and sold the property. Never needed any repairs after all those years. Other than their shutting down their catalog sales department that little trick may have contributed to the fact that the eventually dissolved.

The first washing machine we had was a Kenmore. When we bought the mobile home it was left their. The previous owners did warn us that they used that machine doing almost daily washing for their three kids and they finally moved because they needed more room but they weren't sure it had much life left. We used it for whatever time we stayed in that home and then brought it with us when we moved shortly after our first was born. It lasted for almost 10 years after that before it finally decided it was to tired to go on. I guess you could say the I was a true Kenmore fan. Everything we had after that was Kenmore. Our washer, dryer, freezer, fridge, stove, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, hot water heater and I had a whole tool box full of Craftsman tools.

Sorry, for the length, I go a little carried away.

I've been through many washers in the past 40 years. We moved 2 years ago and I bought the Speed Queen washer I had wanted for a long time! It's a top loader with old school dials instead of electronics, lol! I LOVE it!
I didn’t know they still made these!

LOL. My dad worked in a cannery, so I have ZERO brand loyalty with it comes to canned vegetables, fruit or catsup. Only price matters. Canned goods came off the line without labels and went to the warehouse until they had an order then THAT companies label went on the cans. They had their own brand, plus did a couple of grocery store brands, as well as Libbys, Hunts and Del Monte. Funny thing is, Libbys Hunts and Del Monte ALSO had canneries here and I presume the same thing happened there. Catsup WAS bottled in bottles with labels, but the catsup came from the same vat. They would cook up enough catsup for 3,000 cases, then fill 1,000 cases with their brand label, 1,000 cases with a Hunts label and 1,000 with Libby's labels.
Packard Bell......the computer company that bought the name from the defunct TV maker, custom build computers to the specifications of the specific retailer. It was maddening in 1994 when I bought my first computer trying to price shop because the version made for Montgomery Wards had a smaller hard drive (170mb) and more software. The one made for Office Depot had less software and a bigger hard drive (200mb). The version made for Target had more RAM, the biggest hard drive (250mb) and the least included software.
