I know a lot of people say Chi and maybe because it is older but DD's Chi isn't all that great. It takes her about 45 minutes to straighten her hair--she has thick, wavy hair. She would like a new one so we are looking for suggestions as well as what features we should be looking for?

www.makeupalley.com

Check reviews there and there are message boards. I dont buy any beauty product or tool before checking there first .
Thousands of reviews and there is a board dedicated to hair care. Those ladies know what they are talking about and free to join.

Does she use a thermal hair straightening/ protectant spray? My hair is thick and wavy and the spray makes it MUCH easier to get my hair straight. I have a chi and as long as I use the spray it works perfectly.

She uses a Chi spray of some sort.

I'm not sure if this is an option you might want to look into, but have you considered letting her get her hair chemically straightened? I also have thick and wavy hair and I have mine straightened so I barely have to fool with a flatiron.

No I haven't and I won't. She wears her hair curly some days and straightens it other days.

Chi Turbo, thicker one (the skinny one was useless for me.)

People rave about Solia and Sedu, I tried them and went right back to my Chi.But with her hair type, she should try them to see what works, Folicadotcom has an excellent return policy if you are not satisfied. Try it out, if it doesn not work well, send it back.

Sedu Pro Ionic Ceramic Tourmaline Flat Iron is what my 13 year old with very curly, thick hair got for Christmas and she LOVES it. It comes highly rated.

Santa got it at www.folica.com. They have some good deals.

My DD has thick, curly hair and I have thin, wavy hair and any flat iron will work. The trick is, if you want your hair extremely smooth and pin-straight, you HAVE to blow it out first. I learned that at the salon. When you get your hair flat ironed there, they will ALWAYS blow it out first. I use a big, round boars bristle brush for me and DD. I usually part my hair in 4 sections, since dd's is thicker I do hers in about 8 sections. I dry each section with the brush 1st and then follow it with a 1" flat iron. I also use tresemme thermal protection straightening gel and it keeps the hair really nice for at least 2 days.

I think the size (width) is really important why buying a CHI. A lot of people buy them like the ones at Target but they are the slim ones. I think CHI is one of the best but there are a lot of good ones out there.
I saw a Biosilk one at TJMaxx yesterday for 39.99 (not wide though). It is made by the same company as CHI, Farouk.

I have a CHI and I love it! I have naturally thick, curly/wavy hair so it can be a chore some times. I used to have issues w/ the CHI. But, if I part my hair in sections, use a comb and go slow it works a lot better. I also agree w/ a PP, blowing it out helps a lot.

I use a Hai straightener with Paul Mitchell's "skinny" serum before. Nice!!

.

I've had a Chi for a few years, and I do like it, but I have long, thick, wavy hair and it takes me like an hour to straighten and doesn't do all that great of a job.

I would love to try a GHD straightener. They're really expensive, but I've heard they work extremely well.

I've tried several cheap brands, and then I tried a Sedu, a Paul Mitchell Smoothing Iron, and now I am using GHD. I think the GHD is my favorite, but I am curious to try a Solia because it gets good reviews too.

Another vote for www.folica.com. they have tons of reviews for various straighteners.

Blow dry it as opposed to letting it air dry? DD showers in the evening, lets her hair air dry over night then straightens it in the morning. If she washed her hair in the morning, used a blow dryer, then straightened it, it would take her close to 2 hours to get ready every morning :lmao:.

The top end straighteners are all pretty interchangeable, but I can't think of one that is going to do a decent job of straightening curly hair that hasn't been blown out first.

Would she consider blowing dry at night, or setting her hair on big rollers to dry as long as possible? My best friend has extremely thick, curly hair (half Japanese, half AA) and she does her hair at night and then touches it up in the morning. She loves the products from Ouidad, and is able to get 3 or 4 days in between shampoos. It does take about 2 hours, but that's only 2 or 3 nights a week.

Oh, ETA - anyone with curly hair should check out www.naturallycurly.com - it's got all kinds of information about how to take care of curly hair, including lots of recommendations about products and tools.

I have a chi, but I got a cheap remington wet to dry straightener from target and I love it. I can get my damp hair pin stright with out having to blow out my hair first and then straighten it.

Maybe she should try blowing it out at night and then using the flat iron in the a.m.

DD's hair i wavy when it dries naturally and she can't get it really straight w/o blowing it out (with a BRUSH). Just drying with the dryer won't suffice.
