What is the Animal Kingdom safari?

I heard they have some sort of safari thing, but you have to be a guest of that hotel. Something like being a concierge guest, so I guess you can't just go and pay for the safari and do it? If the safari is separate, then what exactly is left to do in the Animal Kingdom park itself?

There is a ride in AK called Kilimanjaro Safaris. The ride has a fastpass and most of the time you will need to get the fastpass if you don't want to stand in line forever. There is also a safari ride in the early AM that you can pay for. This safari is way more personalized and you usually get to see the animals being fed. This costs extra money - not sure how much.

At the AK Lodge there are probably other safaris that are available for a price. Maybe someone else has more insight on these.

Hope this helps.

Kilimanjaro Safaris is available to any guest with paid admission to the Animal Kingdom Park.

There is also a variety of other Safaris offered at additional costs:

The Sunrise Safari, available only to concierge level guests of Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Then there is the Backstage Safari....

The Sunset Safari takes place on the grounds of the Animal Kingdom Lodge and a smaller Safari van is used.

And the NEW, one-hour wildlife discovery excursions will be available to concierge level guests of all Disney resorts other than the Animal Kingdom Lodge, beginning in mid-February.

I think maybe what the OP was referring to was the Sunrise Safari that is offered through concierge at the AKL ? Some info on that here : http://www.allearsnet.com/acc/faq_akl.htm

As for what's left to do at the AK ---there is plenty. Here's some info on all the attractions at the AK, including the Kilaminjaro Safari that is offered to anyone : http://www.allearsnet.com/tp/ak/ak.htm and also : http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/guides/animalkingdom/ak-overview.htm

The Festival of the Lion King should not be missed. I don't know if you have children or not or how old they are, but Khali River Rapids and Dinosaur are fun rides. It's Tough To Be A Bug is a cool 3D show. Next year a roller coater called Expedition Everest will premiere in the park. Hope this helps. I would suggest purchasing a good guidebook at your local bookstore in the travel section. Also, the two websites I listed offer a lot of good information. :D
