What is the advantage of buying Disney Dollars?

Is there any advantage to buying disney dollars--discount, etc? I know that they are a reward with the DIsney Visa, but I just read the post about the counterfitting and people mentioned buying them at the Disney store. If it's the same price, why not just use regular cash?

There is no "REAL" advantage with Disney Dollars. They change them every now and then. It's just a fun thing to have and maybe even for the scrap book. We had like 300.00 for Disney Dollars that we received over Christmas and birthdays last year, that when we got to Disney, they went pretty much in the first day. But they are accepted all over the "world" and you can use them for anything.

It's fun for the kids and just another little thing that makes Disney a magical place!

It's also a good way to "save" for WDW. We usually buy some once a month at the local Disney Store and put them aside as savings. Less likely to dip into the disney dollar envelope to buy groceries like the regular cash envelope....LOL

No advantage in terms of prices or discounts.

But it's a great way to force yourself to save for the trip. Since you can only use D$ at the parks or a Disney Store, you aren't tempted to spend the money before you go on the trip. I asked for D$ for Christmas so I'd have money to spend at DL last Feb. The $50 I got in December couldn't be spent until I got there, so I wasn't tempted to blow it on other stuff ahead of time! (Just avoided the Disney Store at the mall!)

So now I buy D$ whenever I have some spare cash, so when I go to WDW this December, I can go SHOPPING!!!

Also, some parents give D$ to their kids ahead of the trip (as a part of their allowance or a reward for good grades, extra chores, whatever) so the kids have their own money to spend at the parks, and again, the kids can't spend it ahead of time.

I also tend to buy them for family members who are traveling with us for birthday gifts, holiday gifts, etc. It really gets everyone excited about the trip!!!

My parents just gave me lots of Disney Dollars for my MBA graduation last month - I was so excited!!! The great thing is if they had just given me money I might not still have it when the trip rolls around, but, the DD's I know we'll still have!

We also like them because we don't usually carry much cash - we mostly use credit/debit cards these days. It's nice to have the DD's for snacks & little things in the parks.

fyi...They are NOT a rewardwith the Disney Visa. With Disney Visa you get Disney REWARD Dollars. These are accumulated and then you can have them transferred to a card and use them then and you have one year to use them. They are NOT the same as Disney Dollars that you buy at the Disney Store and then spend at WDW!

I buy them with my rolled up coins and any extra money I have so I WON'T spend it! That's my main reason; so I won't spend it. I also like giving them to my DDs to buy their souvenirs with.

The advantage is to Disney because they get your money sooner. They make even more $ from those who keep the Disney dollars as souvenirs instead of spending them.

YES!!!!

You can use them as payment at the end of the cruise BUT you must still have a CC for purchases during the cruise itself.

As a Disney stockholder the advantage is that you give Disney free use of your money so they invest it and make more money. So Disney should thank you for the investment.

Also, Disney Dollars are cash. If you lose them you are out of luck.

. . . able to use money until DDs are used
. . . if saved as sounvenirs, profitable since they aren't redeemed
. . . entices purchases AT LEAST to the budget limit of DDs

Overall:
. . . we do use them as gifts to grandkids throughout the year
. . . we do give them to all the family when we go to WDW
. . . even if Disney gets free use of money, it is good for us
