I am reading about this here and there and wondering what the heck it is. We are staying at AKL in about 3 weeks, flying in to MCO from Milwaukee on Southwest. It is only for the trip home?

Resort Airline Check in Service. Yes, this is for your return flight. There is a pinned post above that details it. Basically, you can check your luggage at the resort instead of taking it to the airport with you on tragical express. There are only certain participating airlines (Southwest is included) and the window is only open for a period in the morning to about noon. Double check that pinned post for exact details. If you want to use this service, you will need to check your luggage in atleast 3 hours prior to your flight.

From Disney's website

What is Resort Airline Check-In Service?

Resort Airline Check-In Service is a benefit offered to Guests of select Disney Resort hotels who are departing from Orlando International Airport on participating airlines.

You can check your luggage and receive your airline boarding pass right at your Disney Resort hotel. Resort Airline Check-In Service is available if you are flying on:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • American Airlines
  • Delta Air Lines (U.S. Domestic Flights Only)
  • JetBlue Airways
  • Southwest Airlines
  • United Airlines
To pay airline baggage fees, please call (407) 284-1231 to pay the fees before visiting the Resort Airline Check-In desk. Guests under 18 years of age must have parent or guardian permission to call.

You can pay baggage fees with MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover Card.

I am flying southwest with two free bags. Is there an additional fee for this?

There will not be any additional baggage fees for SW, since "bags fly free", but please tip the cast member who assists you with chcking you bags, just as you would if you were using curbside check-in or a skycap at the airport.

So if our flight leaves at 4:30, and we do this for our luggage at the resort, what time should we leave for the airport? 2:30 - 3? We really only need to go through security, right?

Are you using Magical Express? If so, you will be assigned a bus that will pick you up 3 hours (+/- 15 minutes) before your flight time. If you are not taking Magical Express, 2:30/3 p.m. is still too close for comfort on my end. It's a 30-minute drive to MCO from Disney property, and security lines at the airport are regularly some of the busiest in the country. I would leave no later than 2 if you're getting there via a non-Magical Express method.

We actually are renting a car so we will have to return it.

I agree with leaving at 2, 2:30 at the very latest.
Know that if you want to use RAC you need to be at the luggage checkin counter before they close at noon

I would leave at 2 (that means actually in the car at two, not walking out the front gates of a park). That gives time to drive to MCO, fill up the car, return it, get through security, and get to the gate. Of course, I'm one who would rather be sitting in the gate area for an hour than be 5 minutes late.

For a 4:30 flight, you need to leave your resort by 2. It will take a bit of time to return the car and then get to security.
As far as RAC goes, the counter is open from 5-12. You need to be walking away, boarding pass in hand, no less than 3 hrs prior to flight time. I would take the bags to RAC first thing in the morning...around 8ish.

Of course, if the OP uses RAC, they HAVE to be done more than 3 hours before the flight (the RAC desk will close 4:30 before flight). But it is a good reminder for others.

And that was my point...for others who may be leaving sooner.
