What is it with the Spoiler threads?

I've been very frustrated when reading different TV show threads because of the spoilers. For the most part I thiink my frustration is because people don't have the same definition of spoiler.

IMO talking about and episode that has already aired is not a spoiler. People have not watched the most recent episdoe should avoid the thread. A solution I have seen in other places is a new thread for each episode (example - Rockstar 08-22-06). The current thread usually dies once a new episdoe airs.

On the other hand, things about future episodes that come from fan sites or magazines are spoilers and it's sad that these are not hidden. Once again, other sites have a
code so spoilers can be discussed in a non-spoiler thread.

Hopefully I'm not the only one really frustrated that you can't follow a thread about a show without seeing info real spoiler about episodes two weeks out. Maybe people are just beyond wanting to watch shows as they develop and want spoilers all the time. :confused3

This will get even worse as the popular series start back up again.

I hate spoilers too...what is the point of watching when you know what is going to happen? There are so many 'fake spoilers' also; what a waste of time.

Lost has 2 threads here -- one for discussing aired episodes and a separate one for spoilers for people who enjoy them.

This is me.

Although I never, ever talk about what I know that is spoiler-ish unless someone asks...and even then it's in a PM. I try to be respectful of patient people. ;)

eta: yes, I read the last chapter of books first too.

This is why I am leery of joining TV show threads and have been avoiding the Rockstar: Supernova one like the plague. I guess it's good that I have been from the tone of your first post. ;)

But based on what I have seen lately, and time there are two threads very few people ever post to the "non-spoiler one. They also don't seem to see a difference between stuff in aried episodes vs. fan site news and the like.

Big Brother is a great recent example. The spoiler thread is the one people post to, including spoiling who gets Veto and HOH long before the episode airs. I'm not interested in spoilers for that show, but I would be interested in discussing things.

Sadly you are right. I figured there wasn't too much of a chance that people could spoil stuff on that show. I was wrong. :sad2:

I don't blame the people in that thread since it is a "spoiler" thread, but I don't understand why people want to know which song will be played, and with who, before the show airs. I really like the show so I have been reading the thread anyway.

First of all, I've been posting the song choices on the Rockstar thread. If you had a problem with it, I would have prefered a PM or a note on the thread asking me to refrain and I probably would have done so. If this is the reason for this thread then how passive aggressive can you get?The thread clearly states "spoilers welcome" or I wouldn't have posted them. As far as why I like to know, I just do. I don't personally care if someone else can understand why I feel that way or not.

I think for the most part the CB has been really good about separate threads for spoilers and non spoilers. If you don't want to know gossip, casting choices, previews, or anything regarding upcoming episodes then stay away from the spoiler threads. If you haven't watched the episode then also stay away.

I am a huge Deadwood fan but I've not posted to those threads. Why? Because I'm still watching season 2 on dvd and I know there's discussion about the current season going on. I avoid Sopranos threads until after Tuesdays because that's when I generally watch the current episode.

I have a problem with people posting the spoiler in the thread title. Ex: I can't believe so and so might have died!" or in the very beginning of the first post on the thread because anyone with their mouse over the thread could read the info. That's bad spoiler protocol. Complaining about spoilers in a labeled spoiler thread is also bad manners. Big Brother is a good example - there were posts complaining about the live feed info. There's a non spoiler thread for that. If there isn't much traffic on it, then I guess it's up to that person to drum up more or find another way to talk about it.

Crankyshank.........I want to THANK YOU for posting the song choices on the Rockstar thread, I very seldom get to watch the online edition and watch what is going on in the mansion and I have come to depend on you for the song choices! So thank you ......I for one appreciate the spoilers.

I LOVE spoilers, to me they make watching the show even better (especially when I don't agree with the story direction, it gives me time to prepare).

I DO NOT think a spoiler is something that airs on a TV news show (Extra, Access Hollywood, ET). I DO NOT think a spoiler is something mentioned in entertainment magazines (People, Entertainment Weekly, US) or on their websites unless clearly marked as a spoiler. IT is just too much in the common knowledge at that point. This usually is more related to casting or general plot direction though and not specific story line details. I also do not think anything is a spoiler once it airs on the West Coast. It isn't my fault if you taped it and didn't watch the show yet (actually, I TIVO everything, so I am usually the one behind though).

I think a true spoiler is off of a reputable spoiler site and has very specific plot details. There are a few sites that I visit that I would say are right most of the time. There are also a few columnists (like Kristen on E!) who give good spoilers. Also, I consider anything a spoiler that is specifically marked that in a magazine. Any of these type things I NEVER post about.

There are very few TV threads that I follow anymore though because I usually am so far behind on my TIVO.

I thought for sure I had seen more than one person post future song choices and lists. :confused3

I only used that thread as an example because, as you know, it's one I follow despite the spoilers. As I posted, the other example is not reading the Big Brother thread because I consider the live feed stuff spoilers and it ruins the show IMO. In fact I can't imagine watching anything but the live show if you know the rest. Doesn't it make the typcial Tuesday and Sunday shows basically worthless? :confused3

Sorry I came off as PA. I certainly didn't post this just to take a shot at your posting those song selections. If that was the case I would have sent you a PM. I'm much more worried about the other shows like Lost coming up very soon.

One of the ongoing threads during Lost last year was "who would be killed off" and part of the spoiler thread did have ongoing guesses

I see that there are non-spoiler threads sometimes, but very few people ever support them. In fact I think there is one for the current Big Brother season, but it's the spoiler version that gets the attention.

I guess the biggest issue may be that the majority like spoilers these days. Is this true for movies too or is it just TV?

But some reality shows are just not spoiler material like Dancing with the Stars(unless who gets voted off counts)

I guess I don't understand being upset about people posting spoilers in a spoiler thread. They are posting because they want to. People are reading because they want to. What is the problem?

Problem? Didn't say it was a problem.

What is the frustration then? :sad2:

I'm not understanding people getting frustrated with a thread when they know what it is going in. There is nothing wrong with having a thread with spoilers and a thread without spoilers.

I think what cardaway is trying to say is, he's surprised at the number of people who prefer to follow a spoiler thread rather than a non-spoiler thread. It's hard to get a good discussion going on a non-spoiler thread if there are only 3 people on it as opposed to 30 people on a spoiler thread. From my interpretation, he's just surprised at the number of people who like to know the ending before it actually happens.

As I said in my first post, I like spoilers...but I think we manage to come up with a good compromise in our Gilmore Girls thread...we discuss the episodes after they air on the thread, and then once or twice a week one of the girls posts the links to the spoilers for anyone to click if they want to know...but we don't discuss them on the thread. It works for us.

You're welcome to join us, cardaway, but somehow I don't think Gilmore Girls is your cup of tea... ;)

:confused3 Personally, I think there's a decent amount of people who post on the non-spoiler Lost thread. I don't read the other one (during the season) because I don't want spoilers. (I just want the show to, um, move forward.) So I don't know the ratio of posters.

Most of my shows don't even have threads, though. What does that say about me?

Problem = Somebody is doing wrong.

I tried real hard to explain my frustration without saying anybody did anything wrong.

It's real frustrating to want to be involved with discussing these shows but there are no non-spoiler threads being supported and no option within the posting software to allow for a thread to be both.

I certainly believe somebody can be frustrated without there having to be a problem. :confused3

We'll see next month if any non-spoiler threads get supported. If I'm wrong I'll be quite happy.
