What is it with Saturns and DIScon???

The day before I left for DIScon 2001, I took my 1995 Saturn SC2 into the dealership for a routine (or so I thought) oil change. I drove away that afternoon after having spent nearly $1000 to replace virtually the entire brake system.

Now that DIScon 2002 is just around the corner, I should have known better than to take my car to the dealership. The engine developed a "rattle" last week and, when I checked, was about a quart low in the oil department. I topped off the oil and the rattle was a little less noticeable. I asked the Saturn dealer to look into the noise and I was informed that the wrist pins that hold the pistons to the connecting rods are loose and that's what is making the noise. They also informed me that the engine was a quart and a half low. How can an engine that has never used a drop of oil end up using two and a half quarts in the span of one week???

And the best part is their solution to my problem. The want to do an engine flush (to the tune of $150). What bright individual thought up this scam? What the heck is flushing my engine going to do to tighten up the wrist pins? Not a darn thing.

I have taken my car to Saturn every 3000 miles for service. I have spent a small fortune on parts and labor. Only to have the engine start to self destruct at 87,000 miles. And by the looks of things on the internet, I'm not the only one this has happened to.

Now you know why I don't "love" my Saturn. :(
(At least it won't cost me $1000 this time)

I LOVE my Saturn, John. Course it's only a year old and has never misbehaved. Then again, it's never gone on a long road trip either.....

I love my Honda - over 23,000 miles and it has only needed oil. I don't think I will buy another type of car.

(Until this year I always brought American cars - now I finally understand why that was a mistake)

Well, I love my Cadillac, never any trouble and great on road trips :)

So sorry to hear it John. I hate unexpected expenses!!!

Good luck with your car (and stay away from that dealer ;))

I'm a mini-van kind a' gal myself, but we have a few other cars in the family. One is ALWAYS going in for some sort of service for something or other. What a pain! John, you should have known you wouldn't get away with something simple. Good luck with the "flush". ;)

That is terrible news, John. And it must be so frustrating, too. No one likes that unexpected added expense nowadays.

I hope that it doesn't cost much this time.

I have a 1989 Nissan Maxima with about 122,000 miles, and I had a major engine overhaul a few years ago, too.

But, the car is 12 years old, and knock on wood, it still runs great. Of course my speakers are all blown except for one, and I'm seriously thinking about buying new speskers for DIS-CON.

Best of luck to you, John.

If you have to fly down, I'll try to pick you up at the airport and go to Taco Bell for you.

Ray :)

I love my Toyota Highlander.. it is great car.. but before that I had a Landrover Discovery.. I had more problems with that than any car I have had... and my 93 Ford Explorer is still trucking.. my middle daughter has that one..

hmmm....sounds like Dragon-Wagon disease to me, John ;) :p

Good luck, hope it's not too costly

Only $450 to get my car out of the dealership today. At least my backup light work again and there's no static on my radio.

The engine still makes noise and they want me to come back in 500 miles so that they can check oil consumption. Perhaps all the car needs is a good long road trip. We'll see what December brings. Perhaps I should bring our van to DIScon. Lots more room for Guavaberry Rum, Baileys, beer, bottled water, Krispy Kremes, Taco Bell, and kitchen sinks. :)

(Did I forget anything???)

LOL John! I do think that a road trip will fix the problem! :)
I love my Saturn! In fact, in March, I'm thinking of getting a VUE!
I even love my Saturn salesman, Paul. I told my DH that if I wasn't already with him then I'd marry Paul! :o

Sorry to hear about your car John. I hope you get it all fixed up for DISCon though. Maybe you are right though, it could just be "itching" for a road trip ;)
