hi all,
so i'm at work last night.kinda slow, nothing really going on.so anyway one of the guys at work, starts talking about this major snow storm heading our way for monday into tuesday.he goes on to say the news is saying around a foot of snow is comming.a little while later the alarms go off in the fire house and we get a run,its for a auto extircation on the belt parkway at rockaway pkwy.someone has called 911,to report they were in a car accident and are trapped/pinned in the car.so we get there and no one is trapped, pinned or hurt.we hang around a little to block the gentelmans car that is dead in the right line.so the guy starts to tell us about the news is reporting that a major snow storm is comming our way and they said at least 36 inches of snow is expectied. :confused3 so back at the fire house,i go into the lounge were we have cable and watch 3 different weather reports.one being the weather channel, the other being brooklyn news channel 12 and the last being eyewitness news.all are perdicting flurries that will change over to rain.not one channel is perdicting more than 2-4 inches, that will wash away when it turns over to rain.in the past every snow storm that heads our way, there is always a large number of folks that make it sound like a severe snow storm, when in fact news channels are only reporting small amounts.why do people seem to exargerate when it comes to snow? :confused3

Don't know but pending hurricanes often times get exaggerated here in Florida. :teeth:

TV ratings are the highest when there is a big storm coming our news is already hyping this a "Major snowfall" since when is 6 inches of snow a blizzard.

Exaggerated snow fall is just like sex..
You never know how many inches you'll get or how long it wil last!! :rotfl:

That's what I would like to know too.

And I always grocery shop on Sat. but bet that tomorrow the store will be a zoo, because once people around here, hear that snow is coming they freak and start stocking up.

This is the type of thing that backs up the lines at the grocery stores here in Rhode Island. The big joke is to make sure you get enough 'bread & milk'. Even if its just a few inches, all hay breaks loose around here.

In the south if mention the word snow we panic. A light dust snow will close everything in the city. Store will be a zoo. We have the milk and bread.

Around here we call it preparing for the French Toast Party- picking up the milk, bread, and eggs. Why else would you need so much of that stuff when it snows? :cold: :teeth: ?

In my world I have to make sure I have enough Fancy Feast and kitty litter :)

Yep....Atlanta totally freaks when the weather gets back....but it kinda stinks cause we get ice! Never nice soft snow!

Its not just Rhode Island!!! I live in the Midwest and you say "dusting" around here and 10 minutes later its 50 feet and everyone in the office is herding towards their cars to get bread, milk and toilet paper!!!! :confused3

Try teaching....any mention of measurable snow and everyone in the building spends every free minute watching Weather channel or looking up the weather service websites to see if we might get a snow day. The kids come in every period saying what the latest rumors are. A couple of inches during the school day and they start asking if they are going to get to go home early!
To be fair, all teachers in the snow belt are amateur meteorologists--and we know which forecasts are more accurate than the others from years of experience!

Last night I turned on the 11p news & the entire focus of the newscast was a "Storm Team Update". They were interviewing the plow/salt people, and they had several reporters "in the field" checking in. We were forcasted to get 1-3 inches! What the heck?!! :rotfl2: You would have thought we were getting a foot of snow.
