What is it about Cruise Fat???

Following...because I'd like to know the answer to this question. I got off the ship last March and have lost NONE of what I gained on board. Maybe my body is just hanging on to every last bit of cruise it can. I don't blame it. Time to *let it go* body, time to *let it go*.

when food is free like on the ship and a plentiful I'd bet your eating alot more then when you have "vacation fat" you're paying for food and such?

also wander if the high humidity has anything to do with it?

If you use the stairs instead of the elevators, the cruise fat will be less ... Also, limiting the "adult beverages" helps too.

The key is to not put the fat on in the first place. I tell the servers at the first meal that I won't be cleaning my plate and then try my best to stick to it. On the two cruises we've done so far I got home within one pound of my leaving weight. And pick excursions with lots of walking. And I'm not a normally skinny person that can eat anything and not gain weight.

This makes me think of a time, a head pastry chef said to me if you aren't getting fat on a cruise, then you're doing it wrong...haha!

ultimately I also think 90% of the weight from cruises is just water weight since, most people eat ALOT of carbs on the cruise hence each gram of carbs makes you hold 4 grams of water. up your water intake significantly, and flush the salts out. just make sure to mix in a gatorade, or something to keep your electrolytes in balance (or drink chicken broth).

I actually do a keto diet, so when I went on my last cruise I actually put on almost 15lbs because I had an inflamatory reaction to the carbs (its common when you take in less than 30g of carbs per day and then suddenly start eating 1000+/day)

I'm the opposite... I generally lose the vacation weight quickly since I really do eat very differently... its the pounds at home that linger if I let them get on me. :sad2:

The only cruise I ended up gaining weight was my last one in January, and I think the reason was because my cabin was too conveniently located! I didn't do nearly as much walking around the ship as usual. Took me like 5 months to lose the 6 lbs, haha. All my other cruises I ate a bunch but ended up losing 1-2 lbs because I exercised so much more than normal.

I eat low carb/high protein normally...so I think you may have a point...carb overload! I will try to behave myself next cruise, and drink more water (at least I'll be able to say I've visited every restroom on board!).

I am generally good for about a pound a day in weight gain on a cruise (longest I've done is 10 days came back 8 pounds heavier). When I get home I generally drop half the weight in about 2 days, the rest by the end of the first week. I eat while on board, I try and be good at breakfast and generally at lunch but at dinner I've been known to order a couple of appetizers and maybe a second entree So I know some of it has to be from calories consumed. But I attribute a lot of weight gain to water retention. For whatever reason, be it they add a lot of salt to their food, I think a lot of the weight has to do with water vs fat gained and thus returning to a "normal" habit tends to drop the weight fast for me. And I'm no skinny Mickey to begin with.

Me toooo!!!! I gained 18 pounds in 15 days. My clothes did not fit the last few days. It was awful. I vowed to remain off the gluten. It was not worth it...and I was sick as a dog from it, too.

It's not just the cost.... for me, it's the variety that attracts me. I need to sample and try everything. Why let the experience go to waste?

I give my fitbit for some control 10,000 min steps each day. 14,000 steps if I want to see some weight loss. Higher for better results. Sadly my job and disboards gets in the way.
