What is it about 3D?

What is it recently with Disney and 3D movies? Personally, I'm not a huge fan of 3D (it has a tendency to make me a little sick), but it seems that the majority of Disney movies due to come out next year are 3D. Why is that?

Disney wants to sell movie tickets. One way to do this is to provide an experience that viewers cannot (currently) get at home.

In this day of large HD televisions with DVD and BluRay players, why should a family go out to the movies? Just seeing a movie a few months before it's piled high at Costco and Wal Mart may not be enough reason any more.

:confused3 It started with Hannah Montana and they couldn't stop. The only reason I didn't like the Toy Story ride is because it is in 3D. It just aggervates me to no end. I wish they would go back to everything simple and in regular 2D. Animatronics and such. That would make my Disney Experience more enjoyable. They have gone completely crazy inthe last 5 years and they should probably stop before people stop enjoying themselves and start dreading certain attractions. :confused3

The movies will only be shown in 3D at theaters that are equipped with 3D projectors. In most markets, this is only a handful of theaters. At all other theaters, the movies will continue to be shown in traditional 2D. :)

I too am not a fan of 3d but thankfully, my theaters don't have that technology...yet.

OT: I heard that they want to do NFL games in 3D in your home. I would not like this at all.

Personally, I rather like the original stuff Disney did. I'm excited about the supposed return to hand-drawn animation that is supposed to come with The Princess and the Frog. 3D is okay in small doses - Philharmagic is my favorite attraction at MK - but I just don't want to have to see the movie in 3D. The theatre within closest distance to us (still a bit of a drive) has the technology to offer 3D, unfortunately.

Disney committed to the process a while back and is committed to supporting it. Disney has gone so far as to assist theaters to equip with the proper project equipment. They are dead serious about this.

A brief technical explanation of what you're seeing on the screen..

The movie is projected digitally, with a single Christie, Barco or NEC DLP Cinema projector (other digital projection technologies would work as well if fitted with the proper equipment) at 144 frames per second, six times as fast as a normal movie. Every 1/24 of a second (the projection frame rate for normal 2D movies on film) the two scene views called "right eye" and "left eye" are each shown 3 times (6 flashes of image on the screen matching the 6 times higher projection rate). Due to persistence of vision, the 72 image frames and 72 black frames fed to each eye in a given second should be perceived as a relatively flicker-free image. Due to the low original framerate, the channel separation isn't optimal during horizontal camera movements which results in minor ghosting effects

And there are marked advantages to this system vs that which we see in the ThemeParks 3D Implementation.. (they ARE different)

The single projector setup has a number of advantages over previous 3D systems:
It eliminates most "ghost images" caused by the left eye seeing a bit of the right-eye frames and vice versa.
It eliminates any form of temporal (time) or spatial misalignment of the left-eye and right-eye frames that plagued previous 3D projection systems relying on movie film. The mechanical jitter of the film in the projector and the poor frame-to-frame matchup generated most of the dull headache 3D side effect caused by the eye muscle strain — along with the much improved, but still slightly flawed, horizontal/vertical polarization system seen for the last 20 years or so in motion simulation amusement rides, IMAX 3D and in limited other venues (Walt Disney World, Disneyland etc.).

The main trouble with polarized 3D systems for movies is a loss of screen brightness. As every other frame is "invisible" to one of your eyes, the image would seem only half as bright, if projected onto a normal screen.

However, this loss of brightness is counteracted to some extent by the fact that theaters must use a silver screen for this type of projection. A normal white matte screen dissipates the polarization of the projected light. The separation of the two images would be immediately lost, without the silver screen.

It's not even only Disney that is in on this 3D thing. Went to see Coraline in 3D and there were a slew of previews for 3d animated movies coming out.

Right. In addition to Disney/Pixar, DreamWorks Animation has also committed to releasing all of its future releases in 3D. Sony and Fox/Blue Sky will also be releasing some or all of their future animated movies ("Ice Age 3" for one) in 3D. :)

This is true. I would just rather see more of the hand-drawn animation rather than 3D. I understand keeping up with the times and trying to stay exciting, but I'd like some traditional releases, to even out with the 3D. I'm looking forward to The Princess and the Frog, as it's supposedly a return to hand-drawn animation.
