Please give me your experiences on the weather at HHI in late March (spring break), especially wondering about swimming at that time. I know the ocean will probably be too cold, but wondering if the pool is heated and if the air temperature is typically warm or sunny enough? Thank you!

We have been twice in late March. One year was cold and rainy the whole week, the next year was upper 70's and sunny the whole week. Bottom line, it is a crap shoot in March. The pools are always very warm but the ocean is a bit cool.

The average high temp in late march is about 70 degrees.

When it was cold and rainy, did you still find there was plenty to do? We have never been there!

What I love about HHI is it does not feel touristy. It is a laid back environment. Some things we do, kayaking, Dolphin watching, shopping. I love the beach and hanging around Disney's resort. Lot's of great restaurants. Of course if you golf there is plenty of that.

I am not going to lie, it made it tougher to have fun. A lot of shopping and eating and drinking.

CMOORE185, thank you! I just noticed we are both in the Chicago area. Do you recommend driving or flying to Hilton Head Island from here?

We always drive and stop overnight in Ashville N.C. It is about 11 hours to Ashville then another 6 to HH. Ashville is a beautiful area in the mountains and home of the Biltmore Estate, a must see.

There is no direct fight to HH from Chicago. The closest place to fly to is Savannah then you can rent a car or get the short flight to HH.

We will be going there this July and may shake it up and go to Charleston first.

March in the low country is warmly cold or coldly warm. Depends on how lucky you are. :)

Plan on coming over to Savannah and catch something from the Savannah Music Festival.

We avoid St Patrick's stuff, but, we don't like being around drunks. We have gone to the beach that day when I don't have to work. Depends on the weather.

OH one more thing. The Sand Gnats. If it is warmer than 60 and less than 72, you will have sand gnats. The only thing that will stop them is a 50/50 mixture of Skin so Soft and water. Wipe your skin with it and hope. I do believe they sell a small bottle of SsS in the Broad Creek Mercantile.

We went in March one time when I had points that had to be used before 4/1. Having said that we pushed the last 6 days on the month...the result...3 extremely rainy cold weather and 3 days we enjoyed the pool and the sun. It rained so hard the walkways were flooded and when you walked you were about ankle deep in cold rain water. I agree with others it is about a 50/50 chance of good weather!

I agree that a visit to Savannah is time well spent. We go about every other trip and if someone new to the area is with us. Great city with lots of history. And now it is much easier to get into Paula Deans restaurant.

We have been to HHI several times in March, and we'll be there this year in mid March. There may be some cool, rainy days mixed with some warm, sunny days. We enjoy the laid back, relaxed atmosphere regardless of the weather. Since the pools are heated, you can swim even if the weather is cool. We enjoy walking on the beach, but there usually are children playing in the ocean even when we think it's too chilly. Those of you escaping icy winter weather often consider it to be warm when we southerners think it is cold...all a matter of perspective.
There are great activities at the resort, and we've never had a bad visit even if the weather wasn't as great as we had hoped.

Wow-were we there the same week both times? That's been our experience too! Frankly, the year it was cold and rainy all week, DH sat and watched "Sports Center". I yelled at him that we should go out and DO something. His reply? "Isn't vacation about doing what you want to do? Well, I'm doing it!" Frankly, with kids, rainy days might be tough though. Scott, the dolphin watch tour guide told me that he's had parents call begging for a dolphin watch tour-"I don't care if we don't see any dolphins, but the kids need to do something!" And there's always the pool table in Big Murgie's Den, the checkers table, board games the front desk has for free, or DVDs.
