I looked at the DIS abbreviations page and didn't see it there.

I've been reading the cruise boards for only the past couple of weeks and have seen it used, but I can't figure out the meaning from context.

I'm in the teachable moment.

GTY stands for Guarantee. You are guaranteed your cabin selection or better. You are not assigned an actual stateroom number at the time of booking or a particular location on the deck/ship (mid, aft, deck 2 or 6, etc.), it is assigned the closer to your cruise date. Some feel it is a good way to be upgraded come cruise time to a better category. So book what you are comfortable having and then you may be pleasantly surprised.

Wog,
Thanks for the explanation. We booked the first West Coast cruise to sail after the Magic arrives in California. Being cruise neophytes, we studied diagrams of the decks and read lots of threads. We ended up asking our DU agent, the fabulous Tammy Cermak, for Cat 6 on Deck 5 with a "see through" deck enclosure. We were assigned to 5124, which appears to be perfect.

Maybe next time around we'll be daring and try the GTY route.

Thanks again for your help.

Janet

You are welcome. Category 5 and 6 are excellent. We had a 6 on deck 6 (6088 - midship) and loved it. Have a great time and tell us all about the first CA cruise.

I don't dare go GTY with the Aug 2005 repo cruise --- hubby doesn't want to be too forward, and if we go GTY we'd probably have a cabin at the nose of the ship. ;)

I'm a little confused. Is GTY good or bad. I booked my ressies for the CA to FL repositiong on the day they opened bookings and asked for cabin assignments and they gave me three cabins pretty close to mid-ship (where I wanted to be), so seems all good to me. Am I missing something?

GTY isn't necessarily good or bad ... if you are picky about rooms or locations, then GTY can be bad (like hubby doesn't want foreward and with GTY we could end up forward) ... if you don't care about what room you have or location on the ship, then GTY is good because you're guaranteed the category you paid for or better (at no extra cost to you).

Ah, okay..NOW I get it. Yeah, I guess it could go either way. I'm partial to mid-ship, so guess I'll stick with the assignments, but great deal if you get bumped up.

We are cruising the Western Carib. in late October '05. Our room has already been allocated and it is midships Cat 6 on the right ( port/starboard? who knows, nautical terms will become familiar after a diet of Pirates of the Carribean, et-al.)

Is this a particularly good location or should we try to haggle for an upgrade ( it is our 25th wedding anniversary after all)?

We had Cat 6 midship (stateroom 6088) and it was excellent. Has the verandah and midship is supposed to be best for not feeling the motion out of the three choices. Starboard is the right side of the ship so you will be on the side facing the terminal in Port Canaveral. If you decide to upgrade you want to go to a Cat. 4 or better as Cat. 5 is the same room, just one deck up for more money. We found Cat. 6 to be a great value. The only thing I would look out for is if you are in room 6588 or near it as that is directly across from the laundry room and there are reports it gets rather hot and sometimes noisy there.

Happy Anniversary!
